Mother's dietary diversity and association with stunting among children <2 years old in a low socio‐economic environment: A case–control study in an urban care setting in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Abstract: Mothers are often responsible for preparing nutritious foods in their households. However, the quality of mother's diets is often neglected, which may affect both mother's and child's nutrition. Because no single food contains all necessary nutrients, diversity in dietary sources is needed to ensure a quality diet. We aimed to study the association between mother's dietary diversity and stunting in children <2 years attending Dhaka Hospital of icddr,b, a diarrhoeal disease hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. “…Poor nutritional status in pregnant teenage Filipino women is considered a major factor that can lead to poor child nutrition even as economic conditions improve. These findings are consistent with several studies conducted in Bangladesh (Donowits et al, 2018;Alam et al, 2017;Hasan et al, 2019). Moreover, maternal weight at birth was reported as the strongest predictor of linear growth at two years of age (Donowitz et al, 2018).…”

“…Mothers with BMI <18.5 kg/ m 2 had 3.55 times higher odds (adjusted Odds Ratio, aOR 3.55, 95% CI: 2.34-5.38) of having stunted children than mothers with BMI ≥18.5 kg/m 2 in urban slum areas in Bangladesh (Alam et al, 2017). Another important predictor of stunting among children <2 years is maternal short stature (<145cm), as reported by several studies (Ahmed et al, 2012;Hasan et al, 2019). Mothers with short stature (<145cm) have 4.7 times (95% CI: 2.28-9.56) higher chance of having a stunted child compared to mothers with greater height (Hasan et al, 2019).…”

“…However, complementary feeding before the age of five months was not associated (adjusted β = 1.25, 95% CI: 0.92-1.44) with chronic malnutrition (Owais et al, 2016). The children who took less than minimum frequent food, their risk being stunting was higher (Hasan et al, 2019;Owais et al, 2016). The children who received soft, semi-solid, and solid food according to their age, the chance of chronic malnutrition was 1.34 times (p = .005) lower (Zongrone et al, 2012).…”
