Most precise single redshift bound to $\mathsf{\Delta\alpha/\alpha}$

Abstract: Aims. Verification the theoretical prediction of oscillation of the fine-structure constant α (≡e 2 / c) over cosmic time requires high precision ∆α/α measurements at individual redshifts. In earlier studies the mean ∆α/α values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met using the single ion differential α measurement (SIDAM) procedure. We apply SIDAM to the Fe ii lines associated with the damped Lyα system observed at z abs = 1.15 in the spectrum of HE 0515-4414. … Show more

“…The ThAr wavelength calibration of QSO spectra taken with slit echelle spectrographs such as, e.g., the Keck/HIRES or the VLT/UVES, is not stable and can produce both velocity offsets between different exposures and intra-order velocity distortions within each exposure (Levshakov et al 2006;Centurión et al 2009;Griest et al 2010;Whitmore et al 2010). The reason for these calibration distortions is still not well understood.…”

“…The comparison of ∆α/α = −0.07 ± 0.84 ppm at z 1 = 1.15 towards HE 0515-4414 [5] with the measured quantity ∆α/α = 5.36 ± 2.38 ppm at z 2 = 1.84 shows a tentative change of the value of ∆α/α between these two redshifts: (α z2 − α z1 )/α 0 = 5.43 ± 2.52 ppm.…”

“…In order to fulfill this requirement we developed a method called 'Single Ion Differential α Measurement, SIDAM' [2,3,4,5]. Based on the measurements of the relative line position of only one element Fe ii, it is free from many systematics which affect other methods, e.g., [6,7].…”
