Mosquito proboscis-inspired needle insertion to reduce tissue deformation and organ displacement

Abstract: This study investigates mosquito proboscis-inspired (MPI) insertion applied to the clinically used biopsy needle to reduce tissue deformation and organ displacement. Advanced medical imagining has enabled early-stage identification of cancerous lesions that require needle biopsy for minimally invasive tissue sampling and pathological analysis. Accurate cancer diagnosis depends on the accuracy of needle deployment to the targeted cancerous lesion site. However, currently available needle delivery systems deform… Show more

“…Literature indicates fascia of patients with fibromyalgia or myofascial pain measures statistically significantly higher on shear wave elastography, 221,222 and that needling reduces pain. 223–227 Studies also suggest needling significantly lowers the shear modulus of myofascial tissue as measured by elastography (p < 0·01), 95 causes mechanical changes at the point of insertion and at a distance, 91,102, causes windup of the connective tissue, 105 and improves perfusion to the area. 228 A systematic review suggests that needling improves pain and stiffness in people with fibromyalgia and MPS.…”

“…Li et al state that currently available needle delivery systems deform and move soft tissue and organs. 102 This may suggest that inserting a needle causes windup of connective tissue and modulation of the fascial network based on internal forces. Alignment of the system should be done properly.…”

“…The mosquito proboscis-inspired BMNs reduced both local tissue deformation and global prostate displacement when compared to direct or incremental insertion of the needle cannula. 143 This encouraging result was thought to be attributed to the opposing movement of the needle cannula of the mosquito-inspired BMNs, as well as the notches that stabilized and reduced tissue deformation during needle insertion.…”

“…141,142 Recently, the mosquito proboscis was used as a biomimetic model to fabricate painless BMNs for biopsy sampling (Figure 12A-i). 143 The mosquito proboscis plays an important role in blood suction. It is a sophisticated microneedle system that consists of a gutter-like labium that encloses a fascicle.…”

“…Inaccurate needle insertion increases the trauma of the patient and affects the effect of the operation. The deformation of soft organs is an important reason for inaccurate needle insertion [4], [5].…”
