Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Habitat Surveillance by Android Mobile Devices in Guangzhou, China

Abstract: In 2014, Guangzhou City, South China, suffered from its worst outbreak of dengue fever in decades. Larval mosquito habitat surveillance was carried out by using android mobile devices in four study sites in May 2015. The habitats with larval mosquitoes were recorded as photo waypoints in OruxMaps or in videos. The total number of potential mosquito habitats was 342, of which 166 (49%) were found to have mosquito larvae or pupae. Small containers were the most abundant potential habitats, accounting for 26% of … Show more

“…Results show that mosquito management of urban Wuhan was far from the grade C criteria [32]. There is evidence that similar defects of larval source reduction or mosquito management [33,34] existed in urban areas of other NSCs of Central and South China [22]. Those defects do not fit to the recent socioeconomic status [35] of Chinese cities, and it is the violation of the original intention of the National PHCCO in organizing CNSC activities.…”

“…A sampling grid of 36 squares with a side length of 400 m was centered on random points [19,20] calculated using random longitudes and latitudes of a KML file [21] of Wuhan built-up areas border, provided by Wuhan Land Resources and Planning Bureau. Then the file of sampled squares was imported to OruxMaps in android mobile devices [22]. In each square, a DS, a SK, a PMRA, a CS and a segment of WRSD, each with 5 stagnant waters, were selected for mosquito habitats.…”

“…They were particularly used for collecting and transferring entomological information to assess the transmission risk of arboviral diseases. For example, the entomological data (collected by Vectos app, OruxMaps, AutoNavi Navigation and Baidu Map) were analysed in a web platform or central server that successfully identi ed the level of vector infestation (larval indices) as well as the most abundant breeding sites [53,65]. Moreover, mobile phones together with traditional methods (ovitraps) and GIS technologies were able to track and monitor mosquitoes, identifying the index of female Aedes aegypti [60].…”

“…The latter includes mosquito surveillance, which consists of regular reporting of the density and the pathogen prevalence rate of vectors in a specific region. This helps to identify how vectors spread the infections to hosts and to determine appropriate interventions to reduce the risk of infection(Wu et al, 2016). In Rwanda, in addition to active surveillance of malaria cases, mosquito surveillance is carried out in 12 sentinel sites established across the country ( President's Malaria Initiative, 2019).…”
