Moscow Digital Herbarium: A Consortium Since 2019

Abstract: The herbaria of the World, with 387.5M specimens (Thiers, 2019), are being rapidly digitized. At least 77M plant specimens (20%) are already databased throughout the globe in the standard form of GBIF-mediated data. About 55M specimens are imaged, but only 21.6M of them are concentrated in the top-ten largest digital herbaria-P, L, NY, US, PE, BR, MEXU, MW, K, and MPU. The contribution of smaller herbaria has been steadily growing in the last few years due to cost reduction, and usage of platforms and solution… Show more

“…– Our data are fully available in GBIF without any limitations ( Svetasheva and Seregin 2020 ). Since 2 November 2017, Moscow Digital Herbarium is updating the GBIF-mirror once a week, including datasets of the consortium members ( Seregin 2020a ). Loading the data into GBIF helps us check data consistency and find mistakes, like coordinate swapping, inaccurate georeferencing, errors in dates etc.…”

“…The value and universality of herbarium specimens are recognised in most countries, where national and large regional herbaria are actively developing and improving ( Costello et al 2013 , Cranston et al 2014 , Kovtonyuk 2017 , Pearse et al 2017 ). The digitisation and open access to the collections have become a common trend in biodiversity collections management, the latest stage in improving the inventory and modernisation of herbarium collections of the leading botanical institutions in the world ( Heberling et al 2019 , Le Bras et al 2017 , Seregin 2020 , Kovtonyuk et al 2019a ).…”
