MoS2–Gd Chelate Magnetic Nanomaterials with Core–Shell Structure Used as Contrast Agents in in Vivo Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: Despite their frequent usages as contrast agents for in vivo MRI imaging, paramagnetic molecules continue to suffer from low resolution, physicochemical instability, and high toxicity. Herein, we present a molybdenum disulfide and gadolinium complex, as an alternative core-shell magnetic nanomaterial that exhibits enhanced paramagnetic property; 4.5-times longer water proton spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) when compared to commercial gadolinium contrast agents; as well as lowered toxicity, extended blood cir… Show more

“…The greater particle size might be due to the negative charge of MoS 2 –GSH which may have allowed a strong electrostatic interaction with the positive group of CYS. 48,49 In contrast, PF127 polymer coating reduced the size of the nanocarrier from size of MoS 2 –GSH–CYS particle from 110.2 nm to 82.3 nm. 50,51 Zeta potential values for MoS 2 –GSH and MoS 2 –GSH–PF127 were −12.2 mV, and −15.7 mV, respectively.…”

“…Graphene has been functionalized with either Gd(III) or Tb(III) complexes, and with Eu 2 O 3 nanoparticles . Recently, MoS 2 was exfoliated using cysteamine, and reacted with DTPA‐dianhydride (DTPA = dielthylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) to form a Gd(III) chelate . However, the MoS 2 nanosheets agglomerated during exfoliation with cysteamine to form large spheres, eventually forming a core–shell‐like structure when reacted with Gd 3+ .…”

“…In addition, MoS 2 can be exfoliated into nanolayers without the need for complex methods. MoS 2 nanosheets have previously been utilized in transistors [1], biomaterials [2], and nanocomposites [3], and can also be added to polymers as a filler material; because of the high band gap of MoS 2 , the electronic properties of the polymer matrices are not changed. A common reason to add fillers to polymers is to improve their mechanical properties.…”
