Abstract

Death, funeral rites and mourning inBrazil's Covid-19 pandemic Muerte, ritos fúnebres y duelo en la pandemia de Covid-19 en Brasil Abstract: Since March 2020, the new coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on death rites and the experience of mourning in Brazil. From the publication of the "Dead body management manual" by the Ministry of Health, several ritualized expressions of death have been abbreviated and certain phases of the rite have been suppressed. In this article, we point out characteristics of the funerary rites and argue that the interference in the ritual cycle can have consequences for the mourners and for the community, being more intense the greater the distance from the model practiced in the urban context. The interference in the contents and phases of rituals for the dead can throw the survivors into a disorderly mourning process, generating the possibility of future repercussions.
