“…Van Waerebeek et al 1997, Ofori-Danson et al 2003, Clapham & Van Waerebeek 2007, Alfaro-Shigueto et al 2008) without any hygienic precautions. One of the authors (K. Van Waerebeek) suffered an undiagnosed but debilitating chronic disease in 1990 to 1992, a period when he necropsied hundreds of freshly dead small cetaceans in Peruvian fish markets (see Van Waerebeek & Reyes 1994) without gloves or protective clothing.…”

“…Other studies performed in the south-central and southern zones of Chile have reported the capture of individuals of Commerson's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus commersonii), Chilean dolphin (C. eutropia), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis) (Goodall et al 1988, Pérez-Alvarez et al 2015. The species with the highest bycatch frequency off the coasts of Ecuador and Peru are the dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus), bottlenose dolphin, common dolphin and Burmeister's porpoise (Van Waerebeek et al 1997, Reyes 2009, Mangel et al 2010. For pinnipeds in Chile, the only species that has been recorded in individual capture events is the South American sea lion (Hückstädt & Antezana 2003, Arata & Hucke-Gaete 2005, Reyes et al 2013.…”

“…To clarify the magnitude of bycatch in gillnet fisheries for this population, we conducted interview-based surveys among fishermen in 2007 and 2008. An interview-based survey is one ap proach to assess the incidental capture of marine megafauna (Van Waerebeek et al 1997, D'Agrosa et al 2000, López et al 2003, Moore et al 2010, Mancini et al 2012. Additionally, to infer the habitat use patterns of the porpoises, we analyzed data on the spatial distribution of individuals accidentally captured from 1987 to 1992.…”
