“…Intracytoplasmatic clusters of virions, both with or without envelopes, have been reported in cytomegalovirus infections (Desmidt et al, 1991), duck viral enteritis (Barr et al, 1992) and Pacheco's disease (Gómez-Villamandos et al, 1991). Our studies showed intranuclear tubular structures associated with viral replication in different infected cells.…”

“…The spleen presented similar changes to the liver, but necrotic lesions tended to be more severe. In general, the lesions described more closely resembled those characteristic of duck viral enteritis (Leibovitz, 1971;Barr et al, 1992;Davison et al, 1993) than owl hepatoesplenitis (Burtscher & Schumacher, 1966;Gómez-Villamandos et al, 1994a), inclusion body disease of falcon (Graham et al, 1975;Blandsford and Keymer, 1987;Mozos et al, 1994), herpesvirus infection in crane (Burtscher & Grünberg, 1979) or Pacheco's disease (Gómez-Villamandos et al, 1991;Tsai et al 1993), where the primary affected organs are the liver and spleen. On the other hand, viral replication in the oesophagus and gizzard, described both here and for duck viral enteritis (Barr et al, 1992;Davison et al, 1993) indicates that this virus has a marked tropism for digestive epithelium.…”

“…Although described in 1929, PD was not recognized again until the early 1970s in flocks of captive parrots in Florida (40,41). Subsequently, this disease has been reported from multiple locations within the United States (5,6,15,20,26,27,30,35,39) and from around the world, in countries where Central and South American parrots have been imported (3,7,13,14,21,23,24,25).…”
