ABSTRACT. Fish distribution in the Ribeirão (April 2002). Conductivity, pH, water temperature and dissolved oxygen were measured for each site, and elevations in meters were taken by a GPS receiver. The spatial dimension was the main source of variability in the fish distribution in the Ribeirão Grande system. A total of 37 species were caught and the ten most abundant species correspond almost 90% of the total catch. Pareiorhina rudolphi was caught principally in the slope; Characidium lauroi, Trichomycterus itatiayae, Neoplecostomus microps, Astyanax scabripinnis, Taunayia bifasciata and Harttia carvalhoi were caught in the piedmont; Characidium alipioi, Imparfinis minutus and Loricariichthys sp. were caught in the plain of the valley. The sampling stations P6 and P7, located in the transition between tributaries and main channel, were considered an ecotone, where the species diversity was higher.

Abstract. Base-level maps (or "isobase maps", as originally defined by Filosofov, 1960), express a relationship between valley order and topography. The base-level map can be seen as a "simplified" version of the original topographic surface, from which the "noise" of the low-order stream erosion was removed. This method is able to identify areas with possible tectonic influence even within lithologically uniform domains. Base-level maps have been recently applied in semi-detail scale (e.g., 1:50 000 or larger) morphotectonic analysis. In this paper, we present an evaluation of the method's applicability in regional-scale analysis (e.g., 1:250 000 or smaller). A test area was selected in northern Brazil, at the lower course of the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers. The drainage network extracted from SRTM30 PLUS DEMs with spatial resolution of approximately 900 m was visually compared with available topographic maps and considered to be compatible with a 1:1,000 000 scale. Regarding the interpretation of regional-scale morphostructures, the map constructed with 2nd and 3rd-order valleys was considered to present the best results. Some of the interpreted base-level anomalies correspond to important shear zones and geological contacts present in the 1:5 000 000 Geological Map of South America. Others have no correspondence with mapped Precambrian structures and are considered to represent younger, probably neotectonic, features. A strong E-W orientation of the base-level lines over the inflexion of the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers, suggest a major drainage capture. A N-S topographic swath profile over the Tocantins and Araguaia rivers reveals a topographic pattern which, allied with seismic data showing a roughly N-S direction of extension in the area, lead us to interpret this lineament as an E-W, southward-dipping normal fault. There is also a good visual correspondence between the base-level lineaments and Correspondence to: C. H. Grohmann (guano@usp.br) geophysical anomalies. A NW-SE lineament in the southeast of the study area partially corresponds to the northern border of the Mosquito lava field, of Jurassic age, and a NW-SE lineament traced in the northeastern sector of the study area can be interpreted as the Picos-Santa Inês lineament, identifiable in geophysical maps but with little expression in hypsometric or topographic maps.

II AgradecimentosTudo começou em uma tarde durante o Congresso Brasileiro de Geologia de 2008 em Curitiba. O Professor Rômulo Machado me disse que estava envolvido em um projeto de grande extensão denominado "Projeto Falhas" e que estava "à procura" de pretendentes que quisessem fazer mestrado ou doutorado relacionado ao projeto. Um outro professor que estava presente e que também é "culpado" pelo meu doutorado foi o Alexis, meu marido e sempre companheiro, que na mesma hora que soube da proposta do Rômulo não teve dúvidas em tentar me convencer de que fazer uma tese de doutorado, sempre seria a melhor opção para qualquer geólogo que queira aprender mais sobre as geociências. Bom, após horas de conversas eu não tinha dúvidas de que ou eu fazia o doutorado ou eu fazia o doutorado. Não havia outra opção! Fica aqui o meu eterno agradecimento ao meu orientador e amigo Professor Romulo Machado, que com tanta paciência, sabedoria e humildade me ajudou a traçar este caminho e a chegar até aqui. Quanto ao Alexis, não há palavras para expressar todo o amor demonstrado nestes anos todos, principalmente nos quatro últimos, e que nem por um segundo me deixou sozinha a percorrer este "vale do conhecimento" que é um doutorado.Então me vi do outro lado da história, eu é que teria que convencer aos meus superiores na CPRM de que investir na formação de um pesquisador para que este faça seu doutorado valia muito apena, de que para o Serviço Geológico do Brasil ter doutores em seu quadro de pesquisadores é ter uma reserva mineral de inestimável valor em sua posse, pois o conhecimento quando transformado em ações torna-se sabedoria. Nestes quatro anos acabou "sobrando" para todos da minha família, meus pais sempre estavam presentes e perguntando se eu estava bem e se precisava de alguma ajuda. A minha sogra era praticamente a "segunda mãe das crianças", ajudando na educação deles e levando Gabriela (minha filha) para todas as aulas possíveis. A minha amada e única irmã, Adriana, junto com meu querido cunhadoGilberto e seus sete filhos, estiveram presentes em todas as horas de alegria, de doença, de cantorias, de problemas, de danças e festas. A turma lá de casa, Ana, Fafá e Corina, estava sempre cuidando das coisas da casa, das crianças e da Bisa, de modo que eu pudesse me dedicar mais e mais aos estudos. Meus amadíssimos sobrinhos tão educados me estimulavam com suas energias joviais e me passavam entusiasmo em continuar a estudar. Meu cunhado Sandro e minha cunhada Valéria sempre me ligavam para saber se estava tudo bem e no período em que estivemos fora de casa, sempre cuidaram de tudo e de todos.
