Morphometry and aberrant morphology of the adult human tricuspid valve leaflets

Abstract: The tricuspid valve complex has been studied since the beginning of the twentieth century, and variations in the structural orientation of the tricuspid leaflets has been reported before, as the occurrence of accessory leaflets poses a major problem during surgeries related to the tricuspid valve. In this study, 36 adult formalin-fixed human hearts were analyzed to compare the number, form and size of the tricuspid leaflets. The result shows that in right ventricles, the number of leaflets can vary from the ro… Show more

“…They also indicated presence of the "supernumerary", "accessory" or "commissural" cusps, along with the three cusps. The number of these "supernumerary", "accessory" or "commissural" cusps may be 1-2 [2,21,64], 1-3 [66], or 1-4 [29,36,43,60]. In this study, all of the hearts had three eminent cusps and one or two commissural (accessory) cusps.…”

“…The mechanical and structural properties of the left side of the heart have been extensively characterized in the literature [10,11,14,16,19,[33][34][35]. In stark contrast, the right side of the heart and its structures have been largely understudied, especially in the context of the antrioventricular leaflets and chords [7,36]. Moreover, side-by-side comparisons of the left and right leaflet mechanics and structure are very scarce [19,34], and similarly those of the chordae tendineae are nonexistent to the authors' current knowledge.…”

“…Recent extensive progress in invasive cardiac diagnostics and treatment procedures has triggered a wave of dozens of heart architecture morphometric anatomical studies. The aim of these studies is to better understand the cardiac clinical anatomy, and increase the safety and effectiveness of medical interventions (S anchez-Quintana et al 2002;Ho & McCarthy, 2010;Noheria et al 2013;Hołda et al 2015;Klimek-Piotrowska et al 2015;Lama et al 2015).…”
