Morphometric characteristics of selected fluviatile lakes in the Upper Benue Valley Area of Adamawa State, Northeastern Nigeria

Abstract: Bathymetric survey and mapping are important procedures for monitoring temporal changes in hydrogeomorphic characteristics of lakes. This study is the first ever carried out on the lakes, and as such provides relevant baseline information for current use and future studies. The studied lakes (Gwakra, Geriyo, Pariya-Ribadu and Pariya) were purposively selected for the study on the basis of size and relevance. The bathymetric survey was conducted by sounding rod method. Preparation of the Bathymetric Maps involv… Show more

“…With the lake's fetch oriented in the direction of prevailing wind in the Upper Benue Valley, the lake was found to be frequently affected by waves, greater water mixing and sediment focusing from its eastern part. On basis shoreline Length and Surface Area coverage, the lake was found to be the largest among the major fluviatile lakes of Adamawa State when compared to such large lakes as Geriyo, Gwakra, Pariya Ribadu and Pariya described by [25].…”
