Morphometric characteristics and time to hatch as efficacious indicators for potential nanotoxicity assay in zebrafish

Abstract: Although the effects of nano-sized titania (nTiO ) on hatching events (change in hatching time and total hatching) in zebrafish have been reported, additional consequences of nTiO exposure (i.e., the effects of nTiO -induced changes in hatching events and morphometric parameters on embryo-larvae development and survivability) have not been reported. To address this knowledge gap, embryos 4 h postfertilization were exposed to nTiO (0, 0.01, 10, and 1000 μg/mL) for 220 h. Hatching rate (58, 82, and 106 h postexp… Show more

“…Although no significant differences were found in the hatching rate (HR , Table 4) of the embryos cultured with different microalgae, an earlier hatching at days 2 and 3 (72-96 hpf) was observed, when compared to the eggs incubated with water. Early hatching has been cited as an important stress response of fish larvae 55 and similar changes in hatching events have been cited in embryos exposed to nanoparticles 56,57,58 and crude oil extracts. 59 Hatching is a consequence of the production of hatching enzymes and embryo movements 60,61 .…”

“…The early hatched embryos obtained were smaller in size and with larger yolk sacs relative to body size, indicating that the early hatching is not a result of a faster embryogenesis but a consequence of premature hatching. 57,58 However, this early hatching did not affect larval SR at different developmental stages (Tables 5 and 6).…”

“…Hatching rate, mortality, and teratogenicity (bent spine, opaque yolk, pericardial edema, yolk not depleted, short body, submandibular edema, tail malformation, etc.) are all good indications of developmental toxicity in zebrafish (Figure 2) (Haque & Ward, 2018; Samaee et al, 2018).…”

“…Under normal incubation environment, zebrafish embryos should hatch between 48 hpf and 72 hpf. 31 The hatching rates of different groups were recorded from 12 to 72 hpf (Fig. 6B).…”
