Morphometric analysis of panoramic mandibular index, mental index, and antegonial index

Abstract: This investigation was performed to calculate radiomorphometric indices in panoramic radiographs and identify possible relationships between these indices and sex, age, and body mass index of patients in Saudi and non-Saudi populations. Methods: In total, 955 panoramic radiographs were reconstructed from cone-beam computed tomography volumes of 133 male and 167 female patients (age range, 20-75 years; mean age AE standard deviation, 50.8 AE 8.9 years). Three panoramic indicators were calculated for Saudi and n… Show more

“…34 Osteoporosis was initially detected using the Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) tool, but this method is less affordable so one way to establish a more affordable and easier diagnosis of osteoporosis is to measure the width of the mandibular cortex in radiograph results using a mental index (MI). 6,7,9 CONCLUSION According to the results, the age group at risk of osteoporosis is the age of 56-60 years old and the gender at risk of osteoporosis is men.…”

“…11 Sghaireen in 2020 states that the width value of the mandibular cortex is higher at a younger age. 9,12,13 Azhari in 2017 in her study stated that the difference in the width of the mandibular cortex of the right and left jaws can be caused by a pattern of one-sided mastication. 14 The low width of the mandibular cortex is also accompanied by tooth loss, although tooth loss has many causes, however, some studies state that people who experience bone resorption or with osteoporosis experience tooth loss.…”

“…In contrast, Kim et al [ 13 ], Lee et al [ 14 ] and Betancourt et al [ 12 ] reported a significantly greater prevalence of MB-2 canals in males than females among their respective demographics and methodologies. The reasoning could be due to females having greater incidence of demineralisation and cortical bone loss [ 27 , 28 ]. Therefore, the lack of contrast in the radiographs might have impeded the tracing of the MB-2 canals, leading to a lower detection rate in females.…”

“…Con el tiempo, esto puede debilitar los huesos y aumentar el riesgo de osteoporosis. El aumento de calcio sérico por sí solo no mejora la DMO (20).…”
