RESUMO:O objetivo do presente trabalho foi realizar a caracterização morfométrica da sub-bacia do córrego Horizonte, Alegre, ES, a partir da estimativa de alguns parâmetros físicos. Inicialmente foi gerado o Modelo Digital de Elevação (MDE) a partir de cartas topográficas do IBGE, obtidas no banco de dados do GEOBASES-ES, na escala 1:50.000, utilizando o sistema de informações geográficas, através do software ArcGis 10®. A área de drenagem encontrada foi de 12,77 km² e o perímetro, de 20,23 km. A sub-bacia hidrográfica do córrego Horizonte tem formato alongado e baixa tendência à ocorrência de enchentes, devido ao coeficiente de compacidade de 1,585, fator de forma de 0,665 e índice de circularidade de 0,39, razão de elongação de 2,42, apresentando classificação de ordem 4 segundo Strahler. A densidade de drenagem obtida para a bacia foi de 2,30 km/km², indicando boa drenagem do fluxo do córrego, densidade hidrográfica 3,37 rios/km² e extensão média de escoamento superficial de 83m.Palavras-chave: Morfometria. SUMMARY:The objective of the work was to perform the morphometric characterization of the subwatershed of the Horizonte stream in Alegre, ES, from the estimation of some physical parameters. Initially, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was generated from the topographic maps of IBGE, obtained in the database GEOBASES-ES, in the scale 1:50,000, using the geographic information system through the software ArcGis 10®. The drainage area found was 2.77 km² and the perimeter was 20.23 km. The hydrographic sub-watershed of the Horizonte stream has an elongated format and low tendency to occurrence of floods due to the compactness coefficient of 1.585, shape factor of 0.665 and a circularity index of 0.39, an elongation ratio of 2.42, showing classification of fourth order according to Strahler. The drainage density obtained for the watershed was 2.30 km/km², indicating good drainage of the stream flow, the hydrographic watershed density 3.37 river/ km² and average length of 83m from the surface runoff.Keywords: Morphometry. A morphometric analysis using Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing tools was performed to study the Agua Negra River basin, in the Central Andes of western Argentina. Well-delineated drainage basin boundaries are a critical factor in numerous natural resources studies such as flood assessment, water-usage, basin protection, preservation, planning, and resources management. In spite of their advantages, morphometry and automatic delineation of basins have rarely been applied in western Argentina. Through such an approach, the current study has successfully used computer-assisted methods and digital elevation models to delineate 17 basins through which a section of International 150 road passes. The resulting automated delineations were later compared with digital-manual delineations made with digital satellite imagery and topographic maps. The computer-assisted delineation compared very well to the digital-manual delineations, generally following drainage divides. The work load (including reprocessing and editing) was sharply decreased with the DEM computer-assisted delineating method, because digitally derived polygonal sub-basins areas were delineated in shorter times than those of the conventional manual method. Statistically, the absolute difference between computer-assisted and manually-derived basin area delineations was 5.29 percent, in average, on a range of 0.50 -13.83 percent. In addition, a peak discharge analysis has been done as well. The slight differences in some results were irrelevant, when realizing the amount of resources and time saved with the automated techniques.Key words: basin delineation; morphometry; DEM; GIS; Argentina. Baseline morphometric information at a sub basin level is essential to develop appropriate strategy for sustainable, socially acceptable, ecologically benign and economically viable development of a river basin. The present study was carried out in one of the less studied Bharathapuzha river basin (BRB), the second longest river in the state of Kerala, India. The annual discharge of the river is 3.94 km 3 . Nevertheless the basin, which receives about 1828 mm of annual rainfall, in recent years has been facing dearth of water. We used GIS and RS tools to study the morphometric characteristics of the basin. The seventh order main river is formed by several lower order streams forming a dentritic flow pattern. Basin geology, slope and rainfall pattern in the basin determine the morphometric characteristics of the basin. The linear aspects of the basin including stream length ratio and bifurcation ratio indicate the role of relief in the basin while the areal ratios indicate the elongate nature of the basin.
