Morphology of the Pineal Glin Pregnant Nursing Sows

Abstract: The pineal glands of pregnant and nursing sows were studied by light and electron microscopy. Similar structural changes in the pineal gland during pregnancy and lactation were noted as follows: a proliferation of glial cells concurrent with a decrease in the number of pinealocytes, a relative increase in the number of pinealocytes with cytoplasmic accumulation of dense bodies, and an increase in number of presumptive microglia. It appears that pregnancy and lactation exert a complex influence on pineal functi… Show more

“…Morphologically, the pineal gland of the pig is characterized by a large number of electron-dense bodies in pinealocyte (Karasek and Wyrzykowski, 1980;. The structure and number of the bodies change under various physiological (Wyrzykowski et al, 1987;Przybylska, 1990) and experimental (Przybylska et al, 1993 conditions.…”

“…Ultrastructural changes have been described in the pineal gland of rats [Satodate et al, 1980;Karasek et al, 1982], moles [Pevet and Smith, 1975], guinea pigs [Vollrath and Schmidt, 1969], and sows [Wyrzykowski et al, 1987]. Likewise, pineal activity has been related to pregnancy by biochemical studies performed in rats [Tigchelaar and Nalbandov, 1975] and humans [Pang et al, 1987].…”

“…The pineal gland of the domestic pig, which is the subject of the present study, shows several species-specific morphological features (Wyrzykowski et al 1987, Lewczuk et al 1994. Pinealocytes in the pig distinguish from these cells in other mammalian species by the presence of numerous cytoplasmic dense bodies called MBB (Wyrzykowski et al 1987).…”

“…The morphology and relative volume of MBB change in different physiological stages (Wyrzykowski et al 1987, Przybylska et al 1990) and under experimental conditions Przybylska-Gornowicz 1997a, 2000b). Also, the specificity of pig pineal physiology is well documented Przybylska-Gornowicz 1997b, 2000a).…”
