Morphology of the Nucleoprotein Component of Rabies Virus

Abstract: The intracytoplasmic ground substance, or matrix, associated with the development of rabies virus and the nucleocapsid of the virus were investigated. The filaments of the matrix were identified as virus-specific by means of ferritin-labeled antibodies. In thin sections, the diameter was 15 nm and the strands seemed to be incorporated into virions during morphogenesis of the virus. The nucleocapsid was isolated from purified virus preparations and was studied in negative contrast. The rabies nucleocapsid appea… Show more

“…This description strongly suggests that rabies virus RNA synthesis is almost inactive in the inclusion bodies. Rabiesinduced inclusion bodies have been thought to be composed of accumulated viral nucleocapsids (5). Considering this assumption and our observations together, it is suggested that the accumulation of L and P proteins into the inclusion bodies would be responsible in part for the apparently lower rate of viral RNA synthesis than that seen in the VSV-infected cells in which little accumulation of viral nucleocapsids could be seen.…”

“…Such material consists of randomly orientated viral nucleocapsids. as described by Hummeler et al in 1968 [ 71 using ferritin-labelled anti-rabies antibodies. Tubular or bullet-shaped viral particles are also seen budding from the matrix into cisterns of endoplasmic reticulum (Figure 4 f, g) [12,151.…”

“…Rabies as a major zoonotic disease has a considerable public health, veterinary and economic impact. It is an acute fatal viral encephalomyelitis disease, caused by a filterable virus that belongs to family Rhabdoviridae group (Hummeler et al, 1968). Transmission of rabies occurs by bits of infected carnivores (Williams and Barker, 2001).…”
