Morphology, Histology and Histochemistry of the Digestive System of South American Catfish (Rhamdia quelen)

Abstract: The purpose of the present work was the anatomical, histological and histochemical description of Rhamdia quelen juvenile digestive system. Samples of gut were fixed, dehydrated and included in paraffin and then stained with haematoxylin and eosin. For the identification and differentiation of mucosubstances the preparations were treated with Periodic Acid Schiff, Alcian Blue pH 0,4 and 2,5 and PAS/AB pH 2,5. Anatomical details of the oesophagus were like a short tube with primary and secondary mucous folds. T… Show more

“…In the I1 of C. paleatus, the MC were scarce and had a low content of highly sulfated mucins and a high content of weak acid mucins. This result agrees with those obtained previously for teleosts of the orders Perciformes, Cypriniformes, Esociformes, Siluriformes, Beloniformes and Salmoniformes (Reifel & Travill, 1979;Tibbets, 1997;Podkowa & Goiakowska-Witalinska, 2002;Marchetti et al, 2006;Hernández et al, 2009). In this catfish, the AB combined techniques allowed the identification of three types of MC.…”

“…The presence of MC is a common feature in the intestinal epithelium of teleosts (Grau et al, 1992;Çinar & Şenol, 2006;Hernández, Pérez Gianeselli, & Domitrovic, 2009). In the I1 of C. paleatus, the MC were scarce and had a low content of highly sulfated mucins and a high content of weak acid mucins.…”

“…The tunica muscularis of the fish digestive tract is usually organized into circular and longitudinal layers; however, a third oblique layer may occasionally occur (Takashima & Hibiya, 1995;Hernández et al). The existence of an oblique muscular layer in the pirarucu stomach should enhance mucosal fold movements, thereby enabling increased efficiency in mixing food with gastric juices, similar to the function attributed to the muscularis mucosae (Albrecht et al).…”

“…Several studies (Albrecht et al, 2001;Hernández et al, 2009;Løkka et al, 2013, Faccioli et al, 2014 describing the digestive systems of fish have been conducted to elucidate the nutritional dynamics as well as pathological and physiological changes in target aquaculture species. Complementarily, histological examinations of the digestive tract and accessory organs have been used as an auxiliary tool for the nutritional assessment of diets and ingredients (mostly plant sources) for feed formulations (Baeverfjord & Krogdahl, 1996;Krogdahl et al, 2015).…”

“…Al inicio de la alimentación exógena se diferenciaron cuatro zonas histológicamente distintas: cavidad bucofaríngea, esófago, estómago incipiente e intestino, mientras que luego de los 20 dpe presenta un tubo digestivo morfológicamente similar al del adulto (Hernández et al, 2009).…”
