Morphology, epidemiology, and phylogeny of Babesia: An overview

Abstract: Babesiosis is a tick-borne hemoprotozoan disease of domestic and wild animals. The disease is caused by various species of Babesia and some species of Babesia have also zoonotic significance. The parasite in vertebrate hosts’ remains in erythrocytes and the morphology of Babesia spp. is not uniform in all vertebrate hosts. With the advancement of science, particularly the use of molecular techniques made it easy to study the evolution of parasites and thereby reclassifying Babesia spp. as per their phylogeny a… Show more

“…B abesiosis is caused by an intra-erythrocytic haemoprotozoan called Babesia in mammals, birds and reptiles. The economic importance of this disease cannot be neglected due to haemolytic anaemia followed by increased fatality (Laha et al, 2015). Babesiosis is routinely diagnosed through light microscopy when piroplasms are observed in Giemsa-stained thin blood smears.…”

“…Изначально заболевание проявляется в форме общего недомогания и усталости; состояние схоже с симптомами простуды и малярии: лихорадка, озноб, потоотделение, боль в мышцах и суставах [11,13]. Обострение симптомов может включать гемолитическую анемию, внутрисосудистую коагулопатию, гепатомегалию и спленомегалию.…”

“…Babesia causes a hemolytic disease known as babesiosis, which causes malaria-like symptoms and is often misdiagnosed as malaria. Approximately 100 species of Babesia have been identified, but only a few are documented as humans pathogens [18, 19]. Babesia microti is the most common strain associated with human infections [20].…”
