Morphology and histology of the Anatolian bobcat (Lynx lynx) hard palate

Abstract: The aim of the research was to investigate the morphological and histological structure of the Anatolian bobcat (Lynx lynx) hard palate using light and scanning electron microscopy, in addition to gross examination. The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Work (Sivas Branch) provided three female Anatolian bobcat cadavers. The Anatolian bobcat hard palate consists of a narrow, rough part in the rostral region (including the incisive papilla, palatine ridges, and palatine raphe) and a

“…The hard palate has a stratified squamous keratinized epithelium as described by Sa et al (2016) and characterized in other mammals (Ari & Uslu, 2019;Halata, Brian, Baumann, Schwegmann, & Friedman, 1999;Mahdy et al, 2018). The spinous and granular epithelial layers are thicker and more evident than those in the Wistar rat (Hayward et al, 1973).…”

“…In the hard palate, the epithelium is characterized with palatine ridges in mammal orders as Carnivore (Ari & Uslu, 2019), Artiodactyl (Mahdy, Abdalla, & Mohamed, 2018), Primate (Lima, Fioretto, Imbeloni, & Branco, 2012), and Rodent (Mustapha, Ayoade, Ogunbunmi, & Olude, 2015), although in the last one, this feature may be absent (Aro et al, 2019).…”

“…In Anatolian bobcat, caudally directed papillae are present on both the primary and secondary palatine ridges giving them a serrated appearance. In addition to a single row of conical papillae is present in the transverse groove separating the palatine ridges (Arı & Uslu, 2019). In brachycephalic dogs (Evans & de Lahunta, 2013) and tiger (Sarma et al, 2005), the palatine ridges have small blunt eminences.…”
