ResumoEm Pernambuco, além da Floresta Atlântica costeira, e dos Brejos de Altitude, as encostas orientais do Planalto da Borborema também são regiões ricas em espécies de Orchidaceae. Os afloramentos rochosos são comuns e têm sido indicados com uma das áreas mais representativas para a família no Nordeste do Brasil. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo inventariar a flora de orquídeas da área. Excursões foram realizadas entre 2005 e 2013, contemplando afloramentos rochosos de 13 áreas. Foram encontradas 29 spp. pertencentes a 18 gêneros, sendo Habenaria (seis spp.) e Epidendrum (quatro spp.) os mais representativos. Entre as espécies catalogadas destacam-se Acianthera prolifera e Octomeria alexandri como novos registros para Pernambuco, e Phragmipedium sargentianum que consta na lista de espécies ameaçadas de extinção no Brasil. As espécies são amplamente distribuídas a restritas na sua distribuição, dentre as quais, nove são endêmicas do Brasil. Este estudo corrobora informações anteriores sobre a elevada riqueza e abundância de Orchidaceae nas formações vegetais dos afloramentos rochosos, incluindo muitas espécies endêmicas. Apesar disto, poucas unidades de conservação no estado de Pernambuco englobam esse ecossistema tão importante. AbstractBesides the Atlantic Coastal Forest and the Brejos de Altitude in the state of Pernambuco, the eastern slopes of the Borborema plateau are also rich in species of Orchidaceae. Rocky outcrops are common and have been cited as one of the most representative sites for the family in Northeast Brazil. This study did a survey of the orchid flora on rocky outcrops in this state. Fieldwork was conducted from 2005 to 2013, and rocky outcrops from 13 different areas were visited. A total of 29 species and 18 genera were found. Habenaria (6 spp.) and Epidendrum (4 spp.) are the most representative genera. Of species recorded here, Acianthera prolifera and Octomeria alexandri are highlighted as new records for Pernambuco, and also Phragmipedium sargentianum which is on Brazil's endangered species list. The species are either widely distributed or have a restricted distribution; nine of these species are endemic to Brazil. This study confirms previous data on the great diversity and abundance of Orchidaceae in rocky habitats, including several endemic species. However, very few conservation units in Northeast Brazil contain this important ecosystem.

Dryadella (Orchidaceae, Epidendreae) is a Neotropical genus predominantly distributed in the Andean region and the Atlantic rainforest (ARF). Three species occurring in the Brazilian ARF, Dryadella edwallii, D. wuerstlei, and D. zebrina, are challenge to tell apart due to the overlap of morphological characters that define them, so we considered these species as morphotypes. To evaluate the current taxonomic status and to identify suitable characters for the better delimitation of taxon within this group, we measured and analyzed 40 flower characters from 145 individuals of 23 populations distributed throughout the geographical range of this species complex, representing all the morphological diversity of these morphotypes. We performed a principal component analysis (PCA) to summarize all the morphological variations found and a permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) to verify whether the groups formed by the PCA are statistically different. To assess the phenetic relationships among individuals, we generated an unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) dendrogram. As a result, it was possible to clearly differentiate D. wuerstlei from the two other species. The variables that contributed most to the differentiation of the species were the perimeter and area of the sepals (SD1, SD2, SL10); area and width of the apex, mid-portion, and base of the petals (PT19, PT21, PT22, and PT2); and the measurements of the base and widest portion of the lip blade (LB36, LB38). The second group was formed by all individuals of D. edwallii and D. zebrina which present highly overlapping characters with no clear separation between their populations based on PCA and UPGMA results. With this in view, we considered that D. edwallii and D. zebrina correspond to a single species, while D. wuerstlei should remain recognized as a distinct species. We present a taxonomic circumscription of D. wuerstlei and D. zebrina to clarify the taxonomic delimitation of these taxa, highlighting morphological diagnostic characters and their geographical distribution.

In this study, we analysed chromosome number variation and chromomycin A3/4′,6‐diamidino‐2‐phenylindole (CMA/DAPI) banding patterns in 48 species belonging to 12 genera of subtribe Pleurothallidinae (Orchidaceae) in order to understand the chromosome evolution based on recent phylogenetic hypotheses and taxonomic treatments. All species had small chromosomes, with numbers ranging from 2n = 20 in two Specklinia spp. to 2n = 80 in an unidentified Octomeria sp. In Acianthera, the most highly represented genus in this study, a great diversity of chromosome number and pattern of fluorescent bands was observed, showing heterochromatin accumulation in Acianthera section Sicariae subsection Pectinatae. Interspecific ascending and, mainly, descending dysploidy were the main mechanisms of chromosome number evolution in subtribe Pleurothallidinae. For Pleurothallidinae, x = 20 is suggested as the basic chromosome number, the same suggested for the related subtribe Laeliinae and for the whole tribe Epidendreae. The Brazilian species of the mega‐genus Stelis had chromosomes with small amounts of heterochromatin and chromosome numbers based on x2 = 16. These are generally divergent from those reported for Andean and Meso‐American species, but in agreement with the monophyletic hypothesis proposed for Stelis spp. with a Brazilian Atlantic distribution. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 178, 102–120.
