Morphological investigation of the gills of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe 1834) using gross anatomy and scanning electron microscopy

Abstract: The current study has designed to investigate the morphological characteristics of the gills of the dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) by gross morphology, scanning electron microscopy, and morphometric analysis. The study was carried out on 10 fresh fish. The fish has four-gill arches on each side. The lengths of the first-, second-, third-, and fourth-gill arches were 5.27, 4.2, 3.2, and 2.8 cm. The gill arches carried a longitudinal band, the bases of the gill filaments, and gill rakers that varied from… Show more

“…The current research has determined that C. carpio possesses four‐gill arches on either side of its body. These gill arches are arranged in a lateral to medial sequence, similar to the majority of teleost fishes; S. luridus , P. pagrus , B. boops (Alsafy, Seif, et al, 2022), Epinephelus marginatus (Alsafy & El‐Gendy, 2022), Sphyraena sphyraena (Hanafy, 2022), Chaca chaca (Mistri et al, 2016), Corydoras paleatus (Plaul et al, 2021), Siniperca chuatsi (Tran et al, 2022), Labeotropheus fuelleborni , Tropheops (Zogbaum et al, 2021). They are designated as the first, second, third and fourth gills.…”

“…The morphological alterations that fish undergo in response to their diet and surroundings indicate their capacity to swiftly acclimate to the evolving environment (Alsafy & El‐Gendy, 2022; Demirci et al, 2021). The morphology of gill arches and gill rakers is useful for understanding fish species differentiation and identifying new species (Kovalchuk & Barkaszi, 2021).…”

“…The obtained SEM images and light photomicrographs were investigated by Image J (Wayne Rasband and contributors, National Institutes of Health, USA) to measure the different lengths of different setae types, and the mean ± standard error were calculated using Microsoft Excel (Alsafy & El‐Gendy, 2022; El‐Bakary et al, 2023).…”
