Morphological characteristics of the blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) tongue: A structural and immunohistochemical study

Abstract: The blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo, Brünnich, 1768) is a bottom feeder fish of the family Sparidae Perciformes, Teleostei, widely present in the Eastern Atlantic and the western Mediterranean. It lives close to sandy and pebbly depths mixed with rocks and debris and on muddy-arenous depths. It feeds on a wide variety of organisms, such as molluscs, crustaceans and small fish distributed along the entire water column. Currently, the species most frequently bred in Italy are the gilthead seabream (Sparus… Show more

“…A transparent apical pouch wrapped the bogue tongue apex. The most important characteristic feature of the seabream mouth floor is the presence of an apical pouch, which probably has a protective role for the apex (Abbate et al 2022). On the tongue's lateral sides, the epithelium formed an irregular structure that blew up in the center point of the pouch, similar to investigations in Diplodus sargus fish (Guerrera et al 2015;Levanti et al 2017) and blackspot seabream (Abbate et al 2022).…”

“…According to our findings, the tongue of the bogue fish was relatively small, with a distinct apex, body, root, and two lateral margins. Many teleosts, however, had a thick tongue (Ostrander and Hopkins 2000), pointed in Diplodus sargus (Guerrera et al 2015;Levanti et al 2017), rounded in Trachelyopterus striatulus (Santos et al 2015), pyramidal in blackspot seabream (Abbate et al 2022), and cylinder shaped in zebrafish (Abbate et al 2006).…”

“…The oropharyngeal cavity of vertebrates plays an important role in the collection and initial processing of food [ 19 , 20 ]. Adaptive morphological changes are present in the oropharyngeal cavity of different fishes strictly related to the feeding habits of the fish [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. The tongue, which in most fish species is defined as a thickening of the floor of the mouth [ 26 , 27 ], in some species is described as a real taste organ due to the presence of taste buds scattered on its dorsal surface, demonstrating a gustatory ability [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ].…”
