Morphological, Biochemical, and Serological Studies on 64 Strains of Actinomyces israelii

Abstract: A comparative study of 64 strains of Actinomyces israelii was done with the use of techniques standardized by the Subgroup on Taxonomy of the Microaerophilic Actinomycetes. Emphasis was placed on the range of variation to assist recognition of clinical isolates and aid in differentiation from Actinomyces-like organisms. None of the strains was positive for catalase or indole, or in the Voges-Proskauer test; 90% were methyl red-positive and 62% were nitrate-positive. Acid was produced from: glucose (100%), xylo… Show more

“…However, the fact that many of these Actinomyces strains recovered from the normal pocket samples grew readily aerobically might suggest their exclusion from Actinomyces israelii. Problems with classification of oral actinomycetes have been previously described (JORDAN & HAMMOND 1972, SLOTS 1974, SPELLMAN, SOCRANSKY, HAMMOND, AM-DUR, KRICHEVSKY 1974, WILLIAMS et al 1976).…”

“…On the basis of the fermentation pattern of xylose, raffinose, and cellobiose (SLACK et al 1969) the majority of the Actinomyces isolates from deep and normal pockets could be grouped as Actinomyces israelii. However, the fact that many of these Actinomyces strains recovered from the normal pocket samples grew readily aerobically might suggest their exclusion from Actinomyces israelii.…”

“…Analysis of the precipitin reactions, obtained by CIE against standard antigens of A. israelii with antisera to some related bacteria, supported current classification of a separate serological group of A. israelii (5,16,(22)(23)(24). The serological reaction of the components of the cytoplasmic standard antigen of A. israelii displayed species specificity.…”

“…Antisera raised in rabbits against strains of A. israelii have in immunofluorescence, precipit in tests, and cell wall agglutination tests allowed differentiation of a distinct serogroup of' A. israelii, as well as two serotypes (4, 6,7,8,20,24).…”

“…Although their evidence was obtained through studies of the carbohydrate antigens of A. israelii, it is consistent with our data regarding the heterogeneity of type 1 strains. Other authors (6,26) have also detected such heterogeneity among type 1 strains with fluorescent-antibody techniques.…”
