Morphological and yield responses of 20 genotypes of bread wheat to drought stress

Abstract: A randomized complete block design with three replicates using 20 genotypes of rain-fed wheat was applied. Cluster analysis of different wheat genotypes segregated the genotypes into 3 groups. Comparison between the groups in the first crop year revealed that the second and third groups exhibited the highest rate of radiation-use efficiency (RUE), and the first group had the lowest. Grain yield was highest in the third group and lowest in the first group, with an average of 219.87 g/m2 and 173.40 g/m2, respect… Show more

“…Additionally, the observations of different genotypes under two the irrigation levels highlighted the variability in response to water stress among the genotypes and underscored the varying levels of tolerance or susceptibility to limited water availability throughout the three years of the experiment. Similar differences among growing seasons have also been observed in other crop species [69,[73][74][75][76].…”

“…Clustering genotypes based on similar characteristics could provide valuable information for selecting the better performing lines in breeding programs. Thus, cluster analysis has been widely used for assessment of the genetic diversity and grouping wheat genotypes based on phenotypic data and molecular markers (El-Rawy and Hassan, 2014;Arain et al, 2018;Jamali et al, 2020).…”

“…Every developmental stage, including grain filling, maturity, tillering, booting, heading, and germination, is impacted by a lack of water. Drought stress has an effect on plant life, affecting root growth, extension, depth, and partitioning of dry materials [25]. Water stress lowers turgor pressure, which in turn restricts cell proliferation and expansion during the first stage, seed germination [26].…”
