DOI: 10.9775/kvfd.2016 AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine morphologic and morphometric structure and arterial vascularization of glandula interdigitalis in male Hemshin sheep. In the study, 40 feet (20 fore-feet, 20 hind-feet) were used as material. Latex was injected into arteries of fore-and hindfeet in order to determine vascularization of glandula interdigitalis. In the study, 6 measurements were taken from different points of glandula interdigitalis in order to determine its morphometric values. These values were statistically analyzed. Consequently, length of the gland was measured as 30.18±1.93 mm in fore-feet and 25.67±1.77 mm in hind-feet. The gland in fore-feet was determined to be considerably greater than the gland in hind-feet (P<0.05). It was found that the gland was vascularized by branches separated from arteriae digitales palmares communis II, III, and IV in fore-feet and arteria digitalis dorsalis communis III and arteriae digitales plantares propriae III and IV in hind-feet. Materyal olarak 40 adet (20 ön, 20 arka) ayak kullanıldı. Çalışmada glandula interdigitalis'in vaskularizasyonunun belirlenmesi amacıyla ön ve arka ayak arterleri içerisine latex enjekte edildi. Glandula interdigitalis'in morfometrik değerlerini belirlemek için farklı noktalarından 6 adet ölçü alındı. Bu değerler istatistiksel analize tabi tutuldu. Sonuç olarak bezin uzunluğu ön ayakta 30.18±1.93 mm, arka ayakta 25.67±1.77 mm olarak ölçüldü. Ön ayaktaki bezin arka ayaktakine göre önemli oranda büyük olduğu tespit edildi (P<0.05). Bezin ön ayakta arteriae digitales palmares communis II, III ve IV' ten ayrılan dallar tarafından, arka ayakta ise arteria digitalis dorsalis communis III ve arteriae digitales plantares propriae III ve IV tarafından vaskularize edildiği saptandı.

BackgroundThe odours of different body parts and structures, such as external genitalia, female urine, ventral tail radix, infraorbital sinus and interdigital sinus, have a strong attractiveness for rams. The sinus interdigitalis is considered an important trail gland for sexual behaviour, as its odour is included in the list of strongly attractive structures for male animals during the breeding season, being important in pheromone production.ObjectivesIn the present study, the effects of sex and breeding season on the morphological and histological structure of the interdigital gland were investigated in Hamdani crossbred sheep (Ovis aries).MethodsSinus interdigitalis glands located on the forelimbs and hind limbs were collected from 10 male and 10 female sheep during both breeding and non‐breeding seasons. The gland's position in the forelimbs and hind limbs was determined radiographically. The glands were examined macroscopically, histologically and immunohistochemically in both seasons.ResultsIn all animals, the topographic location of the gland between the digits was determined to be distal to the phalanx proximalis and at the level of the phalanx media. The mean weight of the gland in male and female animals was 1.07 ± 0.03 and 1.4 ± 0.11 g, respectively. In general, the results of morphometric measurements were higher during the breeding season, and the increase was more pronounced in female animals. In histological examinations, it was determined that both neck and body parts of the tissues consisted of a structure consisting of a connective tissue capsule at the outermost, dermis, epidermis and lumen underneath. Immunohistochemically staining revealed that oestrogen receptors showed positive immunoreactions only in the intracytoplasmic localization of apocrine sweat glands. In terms of morphological, histological and oestrogen receptors, it was thought that the gland may play a role in sexual communication.

Available online xxxKeywords: Anatomy Morphology Histology Sheep Goats Interdigital sinus a b s t r a c tThe current study aimed to characterize the gross and microscopic structures of the interdigital sinus in Egyptian native breeds of sheep and goats (Baladi sheep and goats) to aid in conducting farther studies on such sinus and its surgical importance. The study was carried out on the distal fore and hind limb specimens (below the fetlock joint) obtained from healthy mature ten Baladi sheep and ten Baladi goats of both sexes. For sheep, thirty specimens were subjected to gross anatomical investigation and the other ten specimens were used for histological examination. While, the forty goats fore and hind feet specimens were examined grossly. The results obtained revealed the presence of a well-developed interdigital sinus in Baladi sheep, but there was no evidence for the existence of this unique structure in all examined specimens of Baladi goats. Such sinus appeared grossly as a pipe-like, composed of two parts; body (corpus) and neck (column) which opened in the skin of the interdigital area with an external orifice. The body consisted of three distinct parts in the forefeet and a single part in the hind feet. Histologically, the wall in body and neck regions of the interdigital sinus composed of three distinct layers; epidermis, dermis and a fibrous capsule. Many sebaceous glands, hair follicles and sweat glands in addition to the glandular apocrine gland were distributed within the dermis. The secretory adenomers of the interdigital sinus arranged in different lobules and lined with cuboidal cells with bleb-like projections. It reacted positively with Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), Sudan black and Sudan III stains, on the other hand it negatively reacted with Alcian blue stain (AB).
