Context The response of most native plant species in New South Wales (NSW) to infection by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands is unknown, which makes decisions about disease management difficult. Aims We aim to improve knowledge about the potential threat from P. cinnamomi by testing a further 32 threatened species for their response to the pathogen and developing a method for prioritising management and susceptibility testing. Methods Susceptibility to infection and host response were evaluated in glasshouse experiments where the pathogen was introduced to pots containing the threatened species, and the results were compared with control uninoculated pots. Our prioritisation used modelled habitat suitability for P. cinnamomi, proximity to known P. cinnamomi occurrences, and numbers of plant species populations at least 1 km apart to rank 928 rare and threatened plant species native to NSW for either management or susceptibility testing. Key results Phytophthora cinnamomi was re-isolated from the roots of 10 of the 32 species assessed, most of which also showed significant mortality or disease symptoms. Darwinia peduncularis B.G.Briggs, Hibbertia circinata K.L.McDougall & G.T.Wright, Isopogon fletcheri F.Muell., Phebalium speciosum I.Telford, Pultenaea baeuerlenii F.Muell. and Pultenaea parrisiae J.D.Briggs & Crisp were the most severely affected species. The effect of P. cinnamomi is known for only 63 rare and threatened species in NSW. The Greater Sydney region is a hotspot for rare and threatened plant species with a high priority for susceptibility testing. Conclusions The prognosis in the wild for rare and threatened plant species affected by P. cinnamomi depends on (1) habitat suitability for the pathogen, with subalpine and arid-zone species unlikely to be affected, (2) the number of unaffected populations, with two severely affected species that occur only on infested sites (Hibbertia circinata and Prostanthera marifolia R.Br.) facing extinction in the near future and (3) climate, with some species (e.g. Pomaderris delicata N.G.Walsh & Coates) apparently affected only in unusually wet years. Further susceptibility testing of rare and threatened species is required. This should be supported by taxonomic studies of genera (e.g. Hibbertia, Pultenaea) commonly affected by the pathogen. Implications Many more plant species in NSW are likely to be severely affected by P. cinnamomi than currently known, and may require active management of the disease for their long-term survival.

A taxonomic revision of the Pultenaea setulosa species complex (Fabaceae, tribe Mirbelieae) is presented. Prior to this study, P. setulosa Benth. was broadly circumscribed as a single, morphologically variable species. Here, we present evidence supporting the recognition of 18 species, 14 of which are new to science. Pultenaea setulosa is recircumscribed as a morphologically uniform taxon endemic to the Marlborough region in south-east Queensland. We reinstate Pultenaea boormanii H.B.Will., Pultenaea campbellii Maiden & Betche and Pultenaea lapidosa Corrick from synonymy of P. setulosa and describe an additional 14 new species: Pultenaea acanthocalyx R.L.Barrett & Clugston, Pultenaea corrickiae R.L.Barrett, Orme & Clugston, Pultenaea estelleae R.L.Barrett & Clugston, Pultenaea farmeriana R.L.Barrett, Orme & P.H.Weston, Pultenaea hoskingii R.L.Barrett & Clugston, Pultenaea imminuta R.L.Barrett & S.F.McCune, Pultenaea murrayi R.L.Barrett, Pultenaea palssoniae R.L.Barrett & Clugston, Pultenaea praetermissa R.L.Barrett & Albr., Pultenaea purdieae R.L.Barrett & Clugston, Pultenaea renneri R.L.Barrett & Clugston, Pultenaea venusta R.L.Barrett & Orme, Pultenaea westonii R.L.Barrett & Clugston and Pultenaea woolcockiorum R.L.Barrett & Clugston. Sixteen of these species are endemic to New South Wales, one to Queensland and one to Victoria. All taxa are described and illustrated, and habitats and conservation status are discussed. Two additional related species, Pultenaea procumbens A.Cunn. and P. setigera A.Cunn. ex Benth. are recircumscribed. Pultenaea setigera is reinstated here, known from the type collection made in 1822 and is possibly extinct. Lectotypes are selected for the names Pultenaea boormanii, P. campbellii, P. procumbens, P. setigera and P. setulosa.

Integrating molecular data is essential for clarifying the distributions and genetic structures of species that have histories of misidentification and misapplication of names. There has been confusion about the species limits of the Vulnerable Prostanthera cineolifera with respect to morphologically similar specimens in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales Australia and morphologically dissimilar specimens in the Lower Hawkesbury Valley New South Wales and from northeastern New South Wales. To test the species limits of P. cineolifera and related taxa specimens were collected from across the range and augmented with herbarium specimens. We used morphometric analysis of 18 morphological characters across 51 operational taxonomic units. Using the DArTseq reduced representation sequencing platform, 9,559 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across 122 individuals were recovered for molecular analysis. Both morphological and molecular analyses produced three concordant clusters (1) P. cineolifera, (2) a group sharing similarities with P. sp. Hawkesbury (B.J.Conn 2591), and (3) a group allied with P. lanceolata and P. ovalifolia. These results indicate that the specimens form northeastern New South Wales are more likely to be P. lanceolata, not P. cineolifera, and that specimens from the Lower Hawkesbury are of an undescribed species with the phrase name P. sp. Hawkesbury (B.J.Conn 2591). Within P. cineolifera there was pronounced genetic differentiation among populations. Little evidence of inbreeding was observed, but the newly recognised, more isolated populations had the lowest genetic diversity. This study provides new information about the range of the species and its genetic structure that informs the conservation priorities for this species.
