“…Tidal fluctuations coupled with cell circulation system and beach profiles result in several types of shore morphodynamic features such as ridge and runnel structures, ripples and sand bars. The morphology and associated dynamics of these features have been well described by several authors like King et al (1949) and Masselink et al (2006) amongst others. Previous authors like NEDECO (1961), Burke (1972), Ibe and Awosika (1986), Awosika et al (1994Awosika et al ( , 2000 amongst others have described the general dynamics (Shepard and Inman, 1951).…”

“…High diversity is often found where there is an optimal balance of these variables, i.e., physical and chemical conditions are intermediate , Hourston et al 2005, Gingold et al 2010). However, some, more heterogeneous beaches display intertidal sandbars intercalated by depressions, which retain water when tides recedes, across their wide intertidal zone (Masselink et al 2006); this habitat is therein called runnel and those beaches that bear it are so-called macrotidal ridge-and-runnel beach. On these beaches, for example De Panne Beach in Belgium, studied by Maria et al (2013b), the two microhabitats (runnels and sandbars) contain different nematode communities, which are reflected in dissimilar across-shore zonation.…”

“…These peculiar beaches were subject to numerous publications that mainly describe their coastal dynamics (e.g. Short, 1991;Levoy et al, 1998;Ruessink, 1998;Voulgaris et al, 1998;Sipka and Anthony, 1999;Kroon and Masselink, 2002;Wijnberg and Kroon, 2002;Stépanian and Levoy, 2003;Anthony et al, 2004;Masselink, 2004;Masselink et al, 2006;van Houwelingen et al, 2006;Lashteh Neshaei et al, 2009). However, the associated bedforms generated over the ridges and runnels have less been investigated.…”
