Morningness-Eveningness Personality and Creative Thinking Among Young People Who Play Recreational Sport

Abstract: Morningness-eveningness personality and creative thinking were investigated in a sample of young people who play recreational sports. Results showed that male participants were more eveningness-oriented than females; evening types had lower scores in creative thinking, although these were not statistically significant; the elaboration factor of the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (Torrance, 1989) was positively correlated with taking part in sport activities in the whole sample; and the elaboration and flui… Show more

“…Oppezzo & Schwartz, 2014), and creative ideation with cognitive reappraisal capacity (Fink et al, 2017;Rominger et al, 2018;Weber et al, 2014). Matching the reappraisal findings, in the present study, only figural creativity, but not verbal creativity, showed significant correlations with physical activity (for a similar specificity of findings, see for example, Cavallera, Boari, Labbrozzi, & Bello, 2011;Colzato et al, 2013). Although the verbal creativity subscales strongly drew on ideational fluency and flexibility (i.e., generate as many different ideas as possible), the figural creativity test was clearly not.…”

“…Correlations were performed using Spearman's rank-order correlation. Cavallera et al, 2011). The data from the present study builds on these findings since all participants were physically active and in general, morning-types were over-represented and evening-types more scarce.…”

“…Henst, Jaspers, Roden, and Rae (2015) found that marathon runners had earlier chronotypes compared to the control population of less active individuals, suggesting that individuals who are more physically active may have earlier chronotypes. This is consistent with recent findings (Cavallera, Boari, Labbrozzi, & Del Bello, 2011;Wennman, Kronholm, Partonen, Peltonen, Vasankari et al, 2015) that eveningness was associated with higher probability of more time spent sitting, in comparison to morningness. Furthermore, social factors play an important role, especially those connected with forcing a specific daily rhythm, such as students' schedule (Ciarkowska, 2003).…”
