Morgan line and its relationship with distraction index, angle of inclination and degenerative joint disease in the diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia

Show more

“…Our data set was derived from a large screened group of dry bone specimens that reflected low prevalence of remnant joint capsule insertion enthesophytes. Nonetheless, the data clarify the anatomic association of the capsule insertion and CCO that previously has been inferred, mostly from imaging (Mayhew et al, 2002;Powers et al, 2004;Risler et al, 2009;Kishimoto et al, 2010;Karbe et al, 2012;Miranda et al, 2016;Sarierler and Bellek, 2017) or by occasional visual anatomic assessment (Morgan, 1987;Pyszkova et al, 2017).…”

“…DI is a method to measure lateral distraction of the femoral head from the acetabulum of the dog, with greater numerical magnitude predicting laxity (CHD) and OA in that joint. Miranda et al () examined coxofemoral joint radiographs of 40 large breed dogs, using both standard and distraction projections. The authors concluded that the various radiographic indicators for coxofemoral joint disease should include radiographic CCO, reported as present or absent.…”

“…Additional contributions from entheses at the dorsocaudal insertion of the joint capsule also are possible, but histological study of bonesoft tissue specimens is needed for clarification. Haines (1975) included several specimens from dogs in a histological study of human physeal closure but not at a level of detail that would further inform recent similar studies (Miranda et al, 2016;Pyszkova et al, 2017) of dogs. Indeed, prospective specimen availability for postmortem examination and new detailed histological studies likely will remain limited, for contemporary societal reasons.…”
