More on the covariant retarded Green’s function for the electromagnetic field in de Sitter spacetime

Abstract: In a recent paper [1] it was shown in examples that the covariant retarded Green's functions in particular gauges for electromagnetism and linearized gravity can be used to reproduce field configurations correctly in spite of the spacelike nature of past infinity in de Sitter spacetime. In this paper we extend the work of Ref.[1] concerning the electromagnetic field and show that the covariant retarded Green's function with an arbitrary value of the gauge parameter reproduces the electromagnetic field from two… Show more

“…The propagator obtained in this paper can now be used to study the massive vector field theory in de Sitter space. Various calculations have been performed in the massless case using the propagators in the Feynman gauge [21][22][23] as well as the Landau gauge [24][25][26] . Physical results should naturally be independent of ξ (and more generally of any gauge fixing term) if the gauge invariance is correctly incorporated.…”

“…Let us consider the gravitational field h ab coupled to the stress-energy tensor T ab . The field in the future domain of dependence of the Cauchy surface Σ, denoted by D + (Σ), is given in terms of the retarded Green's function as [1,2] h ab = h…”

“…This is due to the spacelike nature of past infinity of de Sitter spacetime that casts doubt to the validity of the usage of the covariant retarded Green's function to act as a tool to generate the field causally from a source. This paradox can be resolved by including not only the source term but also the initial data on the Cauchy hypersurface at infinite past when calculating the field configuration using retarded Green's function [1,2,13]. Therefore the field is correctly reproduced to satisfy Gauss's Law at any instance of time over the Cauchy hypersurface.…”

“…The contribution of the l = 0 term in (3.16) to the function (3.15) corresponds to the correlator in dS spacetime in the absence of the cosmic string (for the two-point functions of vector fields, including the massive ones; see [42][43][44][45][46][47][48]). It is simplified to 20) where | x| 2 = r 2 + r 2 − 2rr cos φ + | z| 2 is the square of the spatial distance between the points x and x and we have defined the dS invariant quantity…”
