Abstract: These results suggest that attitudes regarding the acceptability of suicide may be independent of suicidal ideation.

“…These results are consistent with past findings that individuals who report more dimensions of reasons for living across also endorse less suicidal intent than do those who report fewer reasons for living (Malone et al, 2000;Richardson-Vejlgaard et al, 2009). However, only survival and coping beliefs remained a significant predictor in the multivariate model.…”

“…However, African-American women use emergency psychological and psychiatric services at significantly higher rates than do men, as well as women from other ethnic groups (Compton et al, 2005;Doshi et al, 2005;Meadows et al, 2005). Recent reports also suggest that young African-American adult women are at high risk for suicidal ideation (Richardson-Vejlgaard et al, 2009) and suicide attempts (Baca-Garcia et al, 2010). Individuals who attempt suicide are markedly more vulnerable to future suicide attempts and/or deaths than are those without a history of suicide attempts (Brown et al, 2000;Mann et al, 2005).…”

“…Numerous studies in clinical and non-clinical samples have consistently demonstrated that RFL may play protective roles in preventing individuals from putting their suicidal thoughts into action or from engaging in suicidal ideation (Richardson-Vejlgaard, Sher, Oquendo, Lizardi, & Stanley, 2009). Such results suggest that RFL may be a viable point of preventive intervention and risk assessment, especially with cases in which self-disclosure of suicidal motives may elude conventional screening procedures that directly ask for pathological indicators.…”

“…To the contrary, suicide is a leading cause of death among African Americans (Crosby & Molock, ; Heron, ). Available reports reveal that African Americans who attempt or die by suicide report more suicide ideation, but are less likely to demonstrate other oft‐cited suicide risk factors relative to other U.S. ethnic groups (Abe et al., ; Garlow, Purselle, & Heninger, ; Richardson‐Vejlgaard, Sher, Oquendo, Lizardi, & Stanley, ). Conceptual explanations of African American suicide patterns often defer to ethnocultural justifications for African Americans' suicide vulnerability.…”
