Montmorillonite–graphene oxide hybrids and montmorillonite–graphene oxide/epoxy composite: Synthesis, characterization, and properties

Abstract: The hybrids composed of two kinds of layered solids—functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) and organic montmorillonite (OMMT)—were primarily prepared, following which the epoxy matrix composites reinforced with FGO–OMMT hybrids were synthesized. The microstructure of the hybrids with different MMT/FGO ratios and the physical properties of the nanocomposites filled with the hybrids were investigated. The results indicate that d‐spacing of the hybrids is between that of FGO and OMMT, and the FGO flake‐pillared OMMT… Show more

“…In figure 6 c , FTIR pattern of MMT shows the bands at 362 cm −1 (–OH stretch of structural hydroxyl), 3456 cm −1 (–OH stretch of absorbed water), 1643 cm −1 (–OH bending of structural hydroxyl), 1450 cm −1 (–OH bending of absorbed water) and 1037 cm −1 (Si–O stretch of silicate tetrahedral). The pattern of GO shows the bands at 3445 cm −1 (–OH stretch), 1626 cm −1 (–OH bending), 1384 cm −1 (C=C bending), 1711 cm −1 (C=O stretch of carboxyl group), 1218 cm −1 (C–O stretch of carboxyl group) and 1045 cm −1 (C–O–C stretch of epoxy group) [28,40,41]. In the FTIR spectrum of GO–MMT aerogel, almost all the characteristic bands of GO and MMT appear and no new bands present, indicating that there may be no chemical interaction between them in the binary sample.…”

“…Research in the field of polymer modification with functional additives is widely used to develop polymer composites with a given set of consumer characteristics [1][2][3]. So to give polymer composites and products made from them improved functional characteristics, various nanomodifiers are used, for example, oxidized graphite, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) [4], fullerenes [5], graphene nanoplatelets [6,7], natural clay minerals [8,9] or metal oxides [10,11].…”
