Monoterpenes of Teucrium marum

Abstract: Four cyclopentanoid monoterpenes were isolated from Teucrium marum; they are the two [(A) and (B)] C2-epimers of a-(2-formyl-3-methy1cyclopentyl)acrylaldehyde and two new [(C) and (D)] isomeric unsaturated lactones. Structures were established by spectral (u.v., i.r., n.m.r., m.s.) evidence and chemical transformations.

“…Regarding the previously reported chemical composition of Teucrium marum essential oil (Pagnoni et al, 1976;Servettaz et al, 1992), dolicholactones and teucrein were not detected in our oil, in agreement with the analysis of Sanz et al (2000). About this, it is necessary to point out that environmental factors strongly influence the chemical composition of the essential oil.…”

“…On the basis of the 1 H-1 H COSY and HMQC spectral data, the remaining proton signals of the cyclopentane ring in 1 were assigned. Based on comparision with analogues reported in the literature (Callant et al, 1983;Nagia and Prasuna, 1996;Pagnoni et al, 1976), we can define positions 5 and 9 with S and R absolute configuration, respectively. From this assumption, the other chiral centers in the molecule (C-6 and C-8) can be defined both as sinister.…”

“…Glucoside iridoids as harpagide, taucardoside, teucrioside, have also been reported to be present in Teucrium genus [7]. In Teucrium genus have moreover been isolated teucrioside (T. chamaedrys), teupolioside (T. polium) and verbascoside.…”
