Monoterpene and Sesquiterpene Emission Estimates for the United States

Abstract: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) contribute significantly to the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGANv2.02) is used to estimate emissions of isoprene, monoterpenes (MT), and sesquiterpenes (SQT) across the United States. Compared to the Biogenic Emission Inventory System (BEIS3.0), MEGANv2.02 estimates higher isoprene but lower MT emissions for July 2001 and January 2002. A sensitivity study of SQT and MT emission fact… Show more

“…It is computed based on the weather data as described in Section 3.3 and the LAI data as described in Section 3.2.4. g age is calculated with a leaf age algorithm that assigns different emission activities to new, growing, mature, and old leaves (Guenther et al, 2006;Sakulyanontvittaya et al, 2008). There is observational evidence that moderate (or intermittent) drought can increase the isoprene emission while extended drought will decrease isoprene emissions (Guenther et al, 2006).…”

“…As Hong Kong did not have any serious drought during the study period, it is reckoned that normal soil moisture existed, which did not impose any significant effect on the BVOC emissions in the present study. Also note that different VOC species (isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes) have different temperature-and light-dependence factors and algorithms (Kesselmeier and Staudt, 1999;Sakulyanontvittaya et al, 2008) and this can be represented in MEGAN. The parameterized canopy environment emission activity (PCEEA) algorithm was used (Guenther et al, 2006).…”

“…So far, the light intensity dependence of sesquiterpene emissions has not been clear (Sakulyanontvittaya et al, 2008;10 Guenther et al, 2012). Hansen and Seufert (2003) compared the prediction of short-term variations of β-caryophyllene emissions from orange trees (Citrus sinensis L.) with an algorithm accounting exclusively for temperature dependence and with another including both light and temperature dependence.…”
