“…Several different types of monochromators aiming to combine energy resolution of the order of 0.1 eV with small-probe capabilities have been built in the last decade (Terauchi et al 1999;Tiemeijer 1999;Batson et al 2000;Kahl & Rose 2000;Huber et al 2004 (based on the design of Rose 1990b); Mukai et al 2006). All these instruments share one important trait: they disperse the beam in energy when it is at a low voltage of the order of 1-5 keV, and then accelerate it to the final voltage.…”

“…This poor S/N was due to the inability of the monochromator TEM to focus the incident electron beam on an isolated CNT. Recently, a monochromator TEM (Mukai et al, 2007; Sato et al, 2011) has realized an electron probe with 1–2 nm diameter on a specimen with an energy resolution better than 0.1 eV. By using this monochromator TEM, it is expected that an EELS spectrum of isolated CNTs with a high-energy resolution and a better S/N can be obtained.…”

“…EELS spectra (Al L 2,3 -edge) were obtained by using a high energy-resolution EELS transmission electron microscope with an electron probe of 1 nm in diameter [19]. This microscope was equipped with a two-stage Wien-filter as a monochromator and an -filter for analyser.…”
