Monitoring tourism schooners observing estuarine dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in the Estuarine Complex of Cananéia, south‐east Brazil

Abstract: 1. Surveys were carried out between December 2004 and March 2006 on board tourism schooners to detect possible impacts due to tourist activities on estuarine dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in the Estuarine Complex of Canane´ia.2. The estuarine dolphins exhibited different reactions according to the different periods of time that the boats remained close to them: the longer the period, the estuarine dolphins reacted less negatively, and for periods between 2 and 30 min, more positive reactions were observed.3. “…; Bejder et al 2006a), appear to avoid dolphin-watching boats at similar approach distances. This was also the case for estuarine dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in south-eastern Brazil (Filla and Monteiro-Filho 2009). Bottlenose dolphins (T. aduncus and truncatus) in other areas show movement away from the source of disturbance within 100 m (Nowacek et al 2001;Lemon et al 2006).…”

“…Among the baleen whales, humpback whales showed the most dramatic changes from negative to positive responses after whale watching was initiated, whereas minke whales went from approaching vessels to not being interested in them (Watkins, 1986). Therefore, humpback whales, like some populations of gray whales, Eschrichtius robustus (Lilljeborg, 1861), and belugas, Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas, 1776) (Filla & Monteiro-Filho, 2009), may develop a tolerance towards anthropogenic stimuli that could also explain the lack of overt responses in the present study.…”

“…In some areas of Brazil, tourism involving small cetaceans is not perceived by the local community as a positive activity (FILLA & MONTEIRO-FILHO 2009, ZAPPES et al 2011, because since there are no regulations, those activities end up infringing on the existing environmental laws as well as on cultural mores.…”
