Monitoring Spatial and Temporal Scales of Shoreline Changes in Lahou-Kpanda (Southern Ivory Coast) Using Landsat Data Series (TM, ETM+ and OLI)

Abstract: Shoreline changes are crucial for assessing human-ecosystem interactions in coastal environments. They are a valuable tool for determining the environmental costs of socioeconomic growth along coasts. In this research, we present an assessment of shoreline changes along the eastern coast of Lahou-Kpanda of the Ivory Coast during the period from 1980 to 2020 by applying Digital Shoreline Analysis System method using Landsat Data Series. The measurement of the shoreline dynamics of the Lahou-Kpanda coastline is … Show more

“…The digitization work was carried out on a GIS environment, from which statistical calculations of the rate of evolution of the coastline are carried out using the DSAS 5.1 extension. Indeed, DSAS is an extension developed by the USGS (United States Geological Survey) available free of charge that allows you to make calculations on the deviations of the coastlines already digitized from the selected images (Zonkouan et al, 2022).…”

“…In addition, Biak Numfor Regency is a coastal city, so city development is more concentrated in coastal areas. The implication of increased development and human activity in coastal areas will increase the vulnerability of coastal areas to coastal disasters (Zonkouan et al, 2022). It should be remembered that regardless of the form of land cover in coastal areas, with low elevation it will provide opportunities or impact seawater inundation [Hamuna et al, 2018].…”

“…Open Earth Observation (EO) satellite data plays an important role in predicting environmental variables and tracking changes on the Earth's surface at different scales of investigation. While low-resolution data is mainly used for global monitoring, medium-resolution Landsat and Sentinel-2 images (with geometric resolutions of 30 and 10 m, respectively) are adequate for regional and city scale research [1,4,10,16,[19][20][21]. Because assessing the consequences of climate change necessitates the data spanning of a long time period, the multidecadal data that is provided by the Landsat mission (which has been in operation since 1972) is usually chosen over Sentinel-2 data (which has only been available since 2015) [10][11][12][13].…”
