Monitoring Public Perception of Health Risks in Brazil and Italy: Cross-Cultural Research on the Risk Perception of Choking in Children

Abstract: One of the most relevant public health issues among pediatric injuries concerns foreign body (FB) aspiration. The risk perception of choking hazards (CH) and risk perception, in general, are complex multifactorial problems that play a significant role in defining protective behavior. Risk prevention policies should take this aspect into account. A lack of scientific knowledge of FB injury risk perception may be evidenced in Brazil and other newly developed countries. This study aims to characterize the differe… Show more

“…Excessive activity while eating, such as laughing, walking, and crying when handling toys or other small materials, increase choking risk in children, but many parents are less awere about it [29]. Choking cases occur due to the lack of knowledge of the children's parents and caregivers, so it is realized that the community's knowledge regarding this matter must be improved [30], [31]. Parents and caregivers need to be knowledgeable in order to recognize food and non-food objects that can cause choking in children [32].…”

“…Injury surveillance is made difficult by a series of logistic and structural challenges, the most important of which is the accurate coding of injury mechanisms, products involved, types of injury, and body parts involved, given that emergency department (ED) admission and discharge records are largely based on narrative free-text notes [ 7 ]. Injury surveillance integrated with timely data dissemination is crucial for planning and evaluating prevention policies [ 8 ] and quantifying injury burden and related risk factors [ 9 , 10 ].…”
