Monitoring of Generation and Stability of Droplets in Miniemulsion Polymerizarion Using the Near‐Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract: Strategies have been successfully developed for the monitoring of the homo and copoly merization of styrene and butyl acrylate in a miniemulsion system using nearinfrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Different concentrations of costabilizer, stearyl methacrylate, are tested to obtain the best stabilization condition. The spectral data are associated with the properties of the reaction medium, such as particle average diameter, con version, number, and surface area of particles, through linear regression based on partia… Show more

“…As a consequence, the NIR technique is being used successfully in real time monitoring of properties in a number of polymerization systems. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] It should be highlighted that one of the pioneering works focused on the use of a NIR sensor for in-line monitoring of heterogeneous polymerization reaction was carried out by the Prof. José Carlos Pinto's group in the late 1990s, [4] showing that the NIR device could be used to track the average particle size of the polystyrene beads produced during the suspension polymerization. Since then, a lot of activity has been developed concerning the use of NIR spectroscopy for online evaluation of properties of polymers.…”

“…Due to its versatility and speed in the prediction of properties in process streams, the NIR (near infrared) spectrophotometer consists in a valuable tool for the study of the reaction dynamics . [ 2,3 ] Through specific spectral data handling and instrument calibration procedures, it is possible to efficiently correlate the properties of interest with the NIR spectra, thus allowing inference and process control. As a consequence, the NIR technique is being used successfully in real time monitoring of properties in a number of polymerization systems.…”

“…Infrared spectroscopy is a consistent and an essential analytical method for exploring polymer composition . More specifically, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection mode (ATR‐FTIR) might be advantageous for measuring the chemical composition of ethylene/butadiene copolymers as this technique requests straightforward sample preparation.…”
