ABSTRACT:In the context of cultural heritage, an accurate and comprehensive digital survey of a historical building is today essential in order to measure its geometry in detail for documentation or restoration purposes, for supporting special studies regarding materials and constructive characteristics, and finally for structural analysis. Some proven geomatic techniques, such as photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning, are increasingly used to survey buildings with different complexity and dimensions; one typical product is in form of point clouds. We developed a semi-automatic procedure to convert point clouds, acquired from laserscan or digital photogrammetry, to a filled volume model of the whole structure. The filled volume model, in a voxel format, can be useful for further analysis and also for the generation of a Finite Element Model (FEM) of the surveyed building. In this paper a new approach is presented with the aim to decrease operator intervention in the workflow and obtain a better description of the structure. In order to achieve this result a voxel model with variable resolution is produced. Different parameters are compared and different steps of the procedure are tested and validated in the case study of the North tower of the San Felice sul Panaro Fortress, a monumental historical building located in San Felice sul Panaro (Modena, Italy) that was hit by an earthquake in 2012.

The integration of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Structure from Motion and MultiView Stereo techniques allows to obtain comprehensive models of complex objects by using each technique in contexts presenting the optimal operating conditions, as widely reported in bibliographic references. A different situation occurs for emergency surveys. In this case, time and security act as constraining factors, requiring the use of these techniques also in the most unfavourable conditions. In the case of photogrammetry, these include areas where the object surfaces are not perpendicular to the camera axis, and in the case of TLS, they include areas where laser beams are almost tangent to the surveyed object surfaces. These situations are anyway necessary for safely carrying out these surveys in the minimum possible time and cost. Although this kind of survey results locally in lower precision levels than those obtainable by these techniques in ideal conditions, it entails the possibility of obtaining complete models, e.g. including vertical external walls in inaccessible buildings, with controlled precision.

Abstract:In this study, a static displacement monitoring program was developed to maintain the accurate performance of a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) antenna by monitoring its structural stability. The monitoring program was designed to measure static displacement, among the many displacements of the antenna's main reflector, which can directly affect its performance. The program measures the position of a monitored object with mm-level accuracy through close-range photogrammetry that uses high-resolution Charge Coupled Device (CCD) cameras. The developed program will be used to evaluate the structural soundness of an antenna based on continuous displacement measurements, which can also be used as basic data for repair and reinforcement work in the future.
