Molluscicidal activity of some marine substances against the snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Mollusca, Planorbidae)

Abstract: Freshwater snails of the genus Biomphalaria play a major role as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, the etiologic agent of schistosomiasis. While Biomphalaria spp. control by molluscicides is one of the main strategies to reduce the snail population in infected areas, there are few effective molluscicides commercially available. Natural products may be considered as potentially useful and safe molluscicides. We have evaluated the molluscicidal activity of 12 extracts from ten marine organisms on adult … Show more

In this research, the compound 8, in comparison with the main components of the ethanolic extract of J. elliptica by Santos and Sant’Ana (1999), showed an activity (LC 90  = 36.43 μg/mL) lower than that of jatrophone (LC 90  = 8.91 μg/mL) but much higher than those of the jatropholones A and B (LC 90  = 206.16 μg/mL).…”

“…Studies with molluscicides compounds show that it is usual to obtain the death of B. glabrata snail but not the embryos 18 23 25 . The lack of ovicidal activity allows the permanence of the snail host in the environment, maintaining the transmission of schistosomiasis.…”

“…However, niclosamide, has plenty of adverse factors, such as, non-selective toxicity, that harms other aquatic organisms; high cost; instability in sunlight, which in addition requires frequent reapplication due to the permanence of surviving snails after its application 1 10 32 . Thus, novel natural molluscicidal should be investigated as a possible alternative to synthetic products 16 17 18 25 .…”

“…A series of exploratory experiments were conducted using different concentrations to determine the toxicity range of the algal extracts against the tested snails. In the current experiment, five concentrations of aqueous and ethanol extract, each (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm) for each algal species were used for snails (Miyasato et al 2012). Ten snails were transferred to a glass aquarium containing 50 ml dechlorinated tap water as control and three replicates each of ten snails were used for each mentioned algal concentration.…”
