ISBN 978-1-107-02401-4. $99.Fin dall'introduzione di questo libro (1-14) il lettore è indotto a chiedersi se le correnti storiografiche contro le quali l'autore afferma di battersi non siano il frutto di sue interpretazioni inesatte, o esagerate. Ci si chiede chi mai stia perpetuando il pregiudizio "pompeiano", secondo cui le diverse realtà sociali e quotidiane ostiensi sarebbero svanite in un istante, per un qualche cataclisma, 1 e chi siano gli studiosi che tendono a separare le evidenze edilizie dei secc. III-VI dalle persistenze del paesaggio urbano dei periodi precedenti, così da eternare un'immagine di Ostia congelata nel momento del suo apogeo del II sec. d.C. E ancora, la tradizione di studi contro cui Boin si batte non ha mai sostenuto che nella tarda antichità la città fosse semplicemente divenuta una specie di resort marino (come sembrerebbe da p. 8): la questione è ben più complessa. Dire poi che Ostia divenne una città cristiana non attraverso un radicale rigetto del passato romano, ma attraverso un processo di adattamento, significa dire, in realtà, qualcosa di comunemente accettato, e si dimostrerebbe davvero "vecchio" chi sostenesse che simili sviluppi si siano verificati a seguito del "trionfo della Chiesa" già nel IV sec. (9 s.). È giusto ricordare la frase di R. Meiggs secondo cui, nel 1973, era ancora troppo presto per tracciare un quadro dettagliato della Ostia dei secoli IV-IX, 2 ed è giusto osservare che la nuova evidenza rende ora possibile fare questo, poiché la configurazione della città è radicalmente cambiata rispetto all'epoca di Meiggs. Tuttavia vi sono diversi modi per costruire un nuovo approccio al problema, e la presente recensione tenterà di mostrare come quello scelto dall'autore non sia l'unico.E' importante che, elencando gli scopi del libro, Boin faccia capire che in primo piano vi è la questione delle diverse identità religiose (quella pagana o "tradizionale", come lui tende a chiamarla, quella cristiana e quella ebraica), delle loro interazioni e delle loro sfide. Ci si chiede però se la dimensione religiosa, pur fondamentale, possa esaurire la realtà storica e la sua interpretazione, come talvolta potrebbe sembrare nello scorrere queste pagine introduttive. E ci si chiede, ancora una volta, chi mai possa considerare oggi le chiese cristiane come "merely illustrative monuments" (12).Il corpo del libro si compone di una Parte I ("Background") e di una Parte II ("Foreground"): andando avanti si chiarirà il senso di questa distinzione. Del cap. 1 posso qui tralasciare i paragrafi iniziali, che trattano di questioni riguardanti le precedenti fasi di sviluppo dell'insediamento. Venendo invece al vero e proprio oggetto del libro, le fonti su Ostia tardoantica non sono molte.
