Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Micro- and Nano-Particles: A Review

Abstract: In recent years, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have become an excellent solution to the selective and sensitive determination of target molecules in complex matrices where other similar and relative structural compounds could coexist. Although MIPs show the inherent properties of the polymers, including stability, robustness, and easy/cheap synthesis, some of their characteristics can be enhanced, or new functionalities can be obtained when nanoparticles are incorporated in their polymeric structure. “…Chemical synthesis enables to synthesize micro- and nano-particles of conducting polymers that could be useful for the formation of MIP-based structures required for sensors, affinity chromatography [ 58 ] and some other technological purposes [ 59 ]. When the synthesis of CPs is completed, spin-coating techniques [ 60 ] can be applied to deposit polymer layer on the surface of signal transducer.…”

“…It is thus necessary decreasing the size of the particles to enhance uptake kinetics, at the expense of difficulties in practically processing the sorption operations (more specifically proceeding the solid/liquid separation after sorbent saturation). This problem can be overcome by incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles for improving the ready separation of spent sorbent from treated solution [16,48,[55][56][57][58][59] using external magnetic field.…”

“…The correct chemical formation is required for the development of conducting polymer-based nano- or/and micro-particles suitable for the design of molecularly imprinted polymer-based layers used for chemical sensors and chromatographic systems, and many other purposes [ 37 , 38 ]. Electroactive polymers are used not only for sensor design [ 39 , 40 ] but also for tissue regeneration and some other biomedical purposes [ 41 ].…”
