Molecular view of the isothermal transformation of a stable glass to a liquid

Abstract: We have used neutron reflectivity to measure translational motion on the nanometer length scale in exceptionally stable glasses of tris(naphthylbenzene). These glasses are prepared by vapor deposition onto a substrate held somewhat below the glass transition temperature (T(g) = 342 K). When the most stable samples are annealed at 345 K, no translational motion is observed on the 12 nm length scale for over 10,000 s and full mixing requires more than 60,000 s. For comparison, the equilibrium supercooled liquid … Show more

“…Through the study of these new packing arrangements, we hope to gain further insight into the process of glass formation and the resolution of the Kauzmann entropy crisis. In addition, the interesting properties of these vapor-deposited glasses, including higher density (26,28) better thermal stability (25,27), and reduced vapor uptake (58), will likely be technologically relevant.…”

“…The stable as-deposited glass was assumed to be 1.5% more dense than the ordinary glass in accordance with previous measurements on TNB vapor-deposited under similar conditions. [31,177] Notably, the Poisson ratio σ has the same value (0.36±0.01) in both stable and ordinary glass samples and increases for the supercooled liquid as expected. [180] In contrast to the results presented here, aging experiments on glassforming systems show only small improvements in mechanical properties during aging.…”

“…It has previously been shown that these deposition conditions produce glasses with low enthalpy, high density, and high kinetic stability. [31,[174][175][176][177] T substrate was controlled by attaching the SiO 2 substrates to a copper temperature stage (Fig. 6.1a).…”
