“…These body shape differences are remarkably congruent with the observed, but shallow, population-level differentiation within this species. This pattern of low intraspecific genetic divergence is also observed in other Central American cichlids (López-Fernández, Winemiller, & Honeycut, 2010;McMahan et al, 2010). Additional material of V. melanura from rivers in the Caribbean slope would aid in corroborating this hypothesis.…”

“…A sequence was available from GenBank for an individual from Río Belize, and material recently obtained by field collections from water bodies in the Petén-Lake district in Northern Guatemala, as well as portions of the Río Usumacinta basin including Río La Pasión, were sequenced as part of this study (Table 2). Primers and molecular methodology followed McMahan, Geheber and Piller (2010). Sequences were aligned by eye and a Parsimony analysis was implemented in PAUP* (Swofford, 2002) also following procedures of McMahan et al (2010).…”

“…0-5 m. Remarks: McMahan et al (2010) sugested the genus Paraneetroplus for this species based on a molecular phylogeny; however, we provisionally keep this species on Vieja until a comprensive morphological diagnosis for the proposed clades are made.…”

“…Different phylogenetic studies of Cichlinae (neotropical members of Cichlidae) use various generic-level designations for species, such as the use of 'Heros' instead of 'Cichlasoma' in Říčan et al (2013) and other studies. All recent large-scale generic-level taxonomic changes proposed have only been topologically-based, thus renaming clades based on the oldest available generic name within that clade (McMahan et al 2010, López-Fernández et al 2010. The purpose of this study is to generate a phylogeny of the herichthyin cichlids with as complete a taxonomic and molecular loci sampling scheme as possible, and to revise the generic-level taxonomy of these cichlids accordingly based on unique combinations of diagnostic features.…”
