Hemotropic mycoplasmas in dogs, such as Mycoplasma haemocanis, have been described worldwide. Recently, these pathogens have been reported to be causative agent of zoonosis. It is known that its transmission may occur through the action of blood-sucking arthropods (e.g. ticks or fleas), through blood transfusion, contaminated fomites and/or transplacentally. In Brazil, M. haemocanis is present in practically all regions and the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato is suspected the main vector. In the municipality of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, there is little information about infection of dogs by M. haemocanis, or on the main epidemiological features associated with it. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the occurrence of M. haemocanis among dogs infested by ticks and to assess possible associations with some epidemiological factors. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing were used to analyze dog blood samples (n = 94). DNA from M. haemocanis was detected in four samples. No significant associations were observed with any epidemiological parameter analyzed here. However, the results from this study confirm that this pathogen is circulating in this region and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of diseases among anemic dogs.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis caused primarily by Ehrlichia canis and canine thrombocytic anaplasmosis induced by Anaplasma platys are important emerging zoonotic tick-borne diseases of dogs. There is evidence that these pathogens can also affect humans. This study evaluated the presence of E. canis and A. platys in blood samples collected from 256 domiciled dogs in the municipality of Jataizinho, located in north region of the State of Parana, Brazil, by PCR assay. The occurrence of E. canis and A. platys was 16.4% (42/256) and 19.4% (49/256), respectively; while 5.47% (14/256) of the dogs evaluated were co-infected by these two organisms. The presence of E. canis and A. platys was not significantly associated with the variables evaluated (sex, age, outdoor access, and presence of ticks during blood collection). Infection of dogs by E. canis was associated with anemia and thrombocytopenia, while infection induced by A. platys was related only to thrombocytopenia. Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis and canine thrombocytic anaplasmosis should be included in the differential diagnoses when these hematological alterations are observed during routine laboratory evaluation of dogs.Keywords: Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, canine thrombocytic anaplasmosis, PCR, anemia, thrombocytopenia. ResumoErliquiose monocítica canina, causada principalmente por Ehrlichia canis, e anaplasmose trombocítica canina, devida a infecção com Anaplasma platys, são importantes doenças transmitidas por carrapatos que acometem os cães, com evidências que podem também acometer o homem. O presente estudo avaliou a ocorrência desses agentes em amostras de sangue de 256 cães domiciliados na cidade de Jataizinho, na região Norte do Paraná, Brasil, utilizando a técnica da Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR). A ocorrência de E. canis e A. platys foi de 16,4% (42/256) e 19,4% (49/256), respectivamente, com 5,47% (14/256) dos animais apresentando coinfecção. Não foi observada associação significativa com as variáveis sexo, idade, acesso à rua e presença de carrapatos no momento da coleta de sangue. A infecção por E. canis teve relação com anemia e com trombocitopenia, enquanto a infecção por A. platys apresentou relação apenas com trombocitopenia. Com base nos resultados obtidos, reforçou-se a necessidade de que erliquiose e anaplasmose canina devem estar entre os diagnósticos diferenciais, quando da detecção de anemia e trombocitopenia em exames laboratoriais.

Nymphs and larvae of ixodid ticks play an important role on the distribution of ticks and transmission of pathogens. They almost infest small mammals and birds which either move from place to place as rodents or migrate across different countries as migratory birds. The morphological descriptions of nymph and larva of the tick Hyalomma impressum were firstly studied in details by scanning electron microscopy and morphometric analysis. The distinguished characters of H. impressum nymph are as follows: dorsal idiosoma (excluding scutum) with 26-27 pairs of setae, posterior margin of scutum is narrowly rounded, posterolateral margins of scutum is straight, cervical grooves on the scutum extend to the midlength, coxa I with two large spurs, coxae (II-IV) with one small spur for each, spiracle is an egg shape with a numerous pores, palpus does not project beyond the hypostome, with nine setae dorsally and six setae ventrally, hypostome has cylindrical shape, dental formula 2/2, teeth number per file is eight in the outer file and seven in the inner file, basis capitulum has triangular shape without setae dorsally and tetragonal shape with three pairs of setae ventrally. The distinctive characters of H. impressum larva are as follows: idiosoma with 13 pairs of setae for each dorsal (including scutal setae) and ventral (excluding coxal setae), scutum with cervical grooves is narrow and shallow extending about one third of the scutal length, posterior margin of scutum is broadly rounded, posterolateral margins of scutum is straight, fold-like indistinctive spurs on coxae II and III, palpus with eight setae dorsally, three setae ventrally and one seta apically, hypostome with dental formula 2/2, teeth number per file (excluding small basal and apical teeth) is seven in the outer file and six in the inner file, basis capitulum without setae dorsally and with three pairs of setae ventrally.
