Molecular phylogeny of the subgenus Drosophila (Diptera, Drosophilidae) with an emphasis on Neotropical species and groups: A nuclear versus mitochondrial gene approach

“…Later, Throckmorton (1975) recognized it as a paraphyletic taxon, and named it the immigrans-Hirtodrosophila ''radiation'' stating that it forms the basis ''out of which, at different times and levels, other groups arose''. Subsequent studies supported the scenario first envisioned by Throckmorton (1975) of an immigranstripunctata clade closely related to other genera in Drosophilidae (DaLage et al 2007; Kwiatowski and Ayala 1999;Robe et al 2005;Robe et al 2010;Tatarenkov et al 2001; van der Linde and Houle 2008), although its phylogenetic affinity to the Hirtodrosophila genus was not so thoroughly recovered (Remsen and O'Grady 2002;Robe et al 2010). Nevertheless, hosimary sequences were found in Zaprionus indianus, a species that is distantly related to the melanogaster group (Remsen and O'Grady 2002;Robe et al 2005).
