Molecular phylogeny of the Drosophila tripunctata and closely related species groups (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Abstract: We suggest a new phylogenetic hypothesis for the tripunctata radiation based on sequences of mitochondrial genes. Phylogenetic trees were reconstructed by parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. We performed tests for hypotheses of monophyly for taxonomic groups and other specific hypotheses. Results reject the monophyly for the tripunctata group whereas monophyly is not rejected for the tripunctata radiation and other specific groups within the radiation. Although most of the basal nodes were unre… Show more

“…Our TET recovered the immigrans group as the immigrans-tripunctata clade early offshoot (PP = 1.00) in agreement with previous studies (Hatadani et al 2009;Remsen and O'Grady 2002;Robe et al 2005Robe et al , 2010Yotoko et al 2003). The clade encompassing the funebris and quinaria sister groups (PP = 1.00) was the next to branch off, leaving a monophyletic and derived tripunctata ''radiation'' (PP = 1.00).…”

“…For illustrative purposes, we named each of these according to the earlier described species imbedded within each of them: the basal tripunctata lineage (PP = 1.00), the sister cardini (PP = 0.67) and mediostriata (PP = 1.00) lineages. It is particularly striking that the previously reported paraphyletic tripunctata group (Hatadani et al 2009;Robe et al 2005;Yotoko et al 2003) was recovered here as a diphyletic assemblage, with one of its lineages (tripunctata) being paraphyletic in relation to the pallidipennis group, and the other (mediostriata) being paraphyletic to the guaramunu and calloptera groups.…”
