Molecular Phylogeny of Common Cibicidids and Related Rotaliida (Foraminifera) Based on Small Subunit Rdna Sequences

Abstract: To infer the phylogenetic relationships of cibicidids, we obtained small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences of six common cibicidid morphospecies. In view of our results, the placement of cibicidids in different superfamilies, the distinction between planoconvex Cibicides and biconvex Cibicidoides, and the erection of genera such as Fontbotia and Lobatula are unjustified. Moreover, the superfamily Planorbulinacea, in which cibicidids are often placed, is polyphyletic and coiling mode cannot be used as … Show more

“…Measurements of δ 13 C from the calcite tests of epibenthic foraminifera Cibicides wuellerstorfi and related species (Schweizer et al, 2009) are commonly used to trace the spatial distribution of nutrients and deep water masses as well as changes in ocean carbon cycling (e.g., Curry et al, 1988;Duplessy et al, 1988;Curry and Oppo, 2005;Schmittner et al, 2017). Benthic δ 13 C is also slightly influenced (< 15 %) by changes in carbonate ion concentration of sea water .…”

“…For the δ 18 O values of Cibicides (i.e. Cibicidoides; see Schweizer et al, 2009) and Stensioina, we apply an isotopic correction factor of +0.28 ‰ (Katz et al, 2003). Paleotemperatures for both benthic and planktic taxa were calculated from δ 18 O using the equation of Kim and O'Neil (1997): Zachos et al, 1994), assuming ice-free conditions for the Paleocene-Eocene transition.…”
